Red Raiders take OIA title

Clinton Parks scored 12 points, including the go-ahead layup with 1:35 left, as Kahuku downed Campbell 48-43 last night to win the Oahu Interscholastic Association championship at McKinley Student Council Gym.

Kahuku (20-2) captured its first league title since 1968 and earned a first-round bye at the state championships, which begin Wednesday.

Parks, playing with the flu, scored 10 of his 12 in the second half.

"I can't even explain it. This is an unbelievable feeling," the junior guard said.

Kamehameha-Maui vs. St. Anthony for bid

Kamehameha -Maui beat Lanai 52-44 last night and St. Anthony beat King Kekaulike 51-48 in double-overtime to advance to tonight's Maui Interscholastic League second-place game. The winner earns a state-tournament berth.

Okesene Ale added 11 points and Shane Hayden tallied 10 for Kahuku.

"You have to respect Campbell," Kahuku coach Nathan James said. "We told our guys, you don't have to fear them, but respect them. They have a lot of weapons, but we did a great job of executing."

Hayden played at two schools before returning to the North Shore for his last season.

"It's great. I'm glad I came back for my senior year," the sharp-shooting guard said. Hayden made three of his eight 3-point tries.

Junior forward Devin Unga was a force without scoring a lot. He finished with just five points, but hustled for nine rebounds to give his team extra possessions.

"I talked with my old coach from last year, and he inspired me to get rebounds and play defense," the transfer from Utah said.

Kahuku expected a tough game.

"We definitely have a lot of respect for Campbell," said Hayden, who remembered a 53-52 nonconference loss to the Sabers in December. "Our presses, our zone offense and defense weren't in yet."

Tristan Bailey led Campbell (19-4) with 18 points.

"We'll bounce back. Kahuku's attitude is to never quit. They have great athletes," Bailey said.

The senior leader struggled at the line, making just three of his 10 free-throw tries. As a team, Campbell shot just 6-for-15 at the stripe.

"We need to hit the shots when we need it," Bailey said. "And hit the key free throws."

Kahuku used a pestering 2-3 zone trap to take away Campbell's normally easy entry passes. Campbell reserve guard Ryan Hayes, who scored 19 in a semifinal win, was often trapped on the wing and played sparsely in the second half.

Kahuku, a notoriously slow-starting team, shot just four of 19 from the field in the opening quarter, but kept it close at 12-11. The Red Raiders went on a 13-0 run midway through the second quarter. After Ale scored on a layup, Kahuku led 24-14 with 2 minutes left in the second quarter.

Campbell brought the lead down to four, but Kahuku went on a 9-0 run. Hayden's trey from the right wing opened a 31-22 lead midway through the third quarter.

Again, the Sabers chipped away, pulling within 40-38 on a follow shot by Daniel Phillips. They finally regained the lead, 41-40, on a 3-pointer by Mark Sealy with 3:57 left to play.

From that point on, however, it was Kahuku that came through with key plays. Unga hit a free throw to tie the game, and Parks drove the length of the floor for a fast-break layup and a 43-41 Kahuku lead with 1:35 left. Parks stole a pass in the corner by Bailey moments later, and an inbounds sideline pass from Parks to Ale for a reverse layup put the Red Raiders ahead 45-41 with 59 seconds left.

Brown scooped up a deflected pass from Marvin Judd and squared up nicely for the winning shot.

"I thought Marvin was gonna take the shot; the ball was right there," said Brown, who took just four shots all game and finished with four points.

Kalaheo (17-12) claimed the league's No. 3 seed for the state tournament, which begins Wednesday at Blaisdell Arena.

Judd led Kalaheo with 20 points on six-of-12 shooting. Tyler Caswell added 10 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots.

Jonathan Torres scored 16 points and pulled down seven boards to lead Kaimuki (16-8). During the regular season, the Bulldogs finished third in the OIA East behind runner-up Kalaheo.
