Seasider women break own recordThe top-ranked Brigham Young University-Hawaii women's tennis team broke its own NCAA record yesterday, winning its 104th consecutive dual match by defeating host UH-Hilo 8-1.The Seasiders swept the doubles matches and won the top five singles matches against the Vulcans. In the top three singles matches, BYUH lost just four games. The previous record for consecutive dual match wins was set by the Seasiders at 103. Since moving to NCAA Division II, the Seasiders hold a 207-1 record. » The Hawaii women's team dropped a 6-1 decision to San Francisco yesterday at Golden Gate Park. Sophomore Sylvia Jaros was the only Rainbow Wahine to win her match, defeating Joana Macedo 6-4, 6-2. Hawaii's Lauren Fitzgerald led 6-0, 5-3 in her match against USF's Camille Pamart when rain caused a 25-minute delay. When the match resumed, Pamart rallied to defeat Fitzgerald 0-6, 7-5, 6-1. The 'Bows continue their road trip at Sacramento State tomorrow.
Williams perfect at Monster Energy ProHaleiwa's Ross Williams earned the only perfect 10 yesterday in Day 2 of the Monster Energy Pro held at Pipeline, where surf stayed at a small 6 feet compared to Thursday's occasional 15-foot sets.Williams emerged as the top scorer of the third round with 10- and 8.75-point rides. Thirteen of 16 third-round heats were run to completion yesterday before organizers halted the event due to deteriorating conditions.
Hilo falls just short against NebraskaAndy Gerch executed a safety squeeze in the sixth inning to lead Nebraska to a 2-1 win over Hilo's baseball team in the first game of a doubleheader at Wong Stadium yesterday.The Cornhuskers (3-0) beat the Vulcans 5-1 in the second game. Chris Campbell homered in the second game for the Vulcans (1-15), who meet the 'Huskers again today and tomorrow. » Hawaii Pacific (7-4) used a four-run sixth inning to take the first game of a doubleheader against Sonoma State 5-4 yesterday at Keehi Lagoon Field. Shortstop Grandon Costa lead the Sea Warriors, batting 3-for-4, including three RBIs. Pitcher Juan Guerra allowed three hits and one walk while striking out three in 3 2/3 innings to pick up the win. In the second game, Justin Wiley allowed two hits in four innings to help the Cossacks pick up the 2-1 win.
Coogan pitches Wahine to winThe University of Hawaii softball team picked up its sixth win of the season yesterday, defeating Northern Iowa 3-1 on the first day of the 2005 Worth Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz.Melissa Coogan pitched her third complete game victory, giving up one earned run while striking out three, walking none, and one hit-by-pitch. Catcher Denise Dahlberg led the 'Bows, going 2-for-3 and driving in a run. The 'Bows will play Marshall in the early game today, and follow that with a game against No. 2 Arizona.
