'Art of Rice' talk

Roy W. Hamilton, guest curator of "The Art of Rice: Spirit and Sustenance in Asia," will tell stories of Asia's rice goddesses and explore their origins during a free talk at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Honolulu Academy of Arts' Doris Duke Theater.

The exhibition continues at the academy through April 21. For more information, call 532-8700.

Casting about

Producers of "The Greenstick Project" are looking for actors for a "micro-budget" independent digital feature, a drama about a film festival. Auditions will take place March 4 to 6 and 11 to 13 for the production filming in April and May.

Watch for whales

The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary is offering shoreline lunchtime whale watches, a fun and educational shore-based survey of humpback whales. Dates are:

Feb. 25: Makapuu Point Lighthouse, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; repeats March 18.

March 4: Diamond Head, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; repeats March 11.

Krall at Shell in May

Tickets go on sale Feb. 26 for the 7 p.m. May 8 concert featuring Grammy award-winning jazz singer-pianist Diana Krall and the Honolulu Symphony Pops at the Waikiki Shell. Hawaii will be the final stop on her tour.

Meow, meow, meow

"CATS," the Andrew Lloyd Webber show that was the longest running musical on Broadway, a total of 18 years, returns to the Blaisdell Concert Hall in a touring show April 12 to 17.

This is the national tour that has not been seen in seven years in Hawaii.

Tickets are now on sale at the Blaisdell box office and all Ticketmaster outlets, including Times Supermarkets. To charge-by-phone, call 877-750-4400 or go online at www.ticketmaster.com.

The opening night performance will have special ticket prices at $30, $45 and $55. Subsequent performance prices will be $35, $55 and $65, with Apr. 15, 16 and the matinee performance on the 17th at $45, $65 and $75.

Watch those feet fly

Tickets are on sale for the theatrical extravaganza that catapulted Irish dance into the global spotlight, Michael Flatley's "Lord of the Dance."

It will play at the Blaisdell Concert Hall April 29 to May 8 for 10 performances only.

The presenting Jam Theatricals is offering special discounts for groups of 20 or more, especially targeting schools, dance companies - and those local folk of Irish heritage or sympathetic to it - with the offer of 10 percent off the ticket price.
