Hilo gets first victory of the baseball season

David Chu rapped out a pair of hits and Hawaii-Hilo got a solid effort from three pitchers to beat Hawaii Pacific 3-1 in the first game of a doubleheader yesterday at Wong Stadium in Hilo.

The Sea Warriors took the second game 10-6.

It was the first win of the season for the Vulcans (1-12) and the first road trip for the Sea Warriors (5-2).

Esene keeps Vulcans rolling

Skip Esene scored 27 points in 28 minutes and the Hawaii-Hilo basketball team blew out Western New Mexico 92-72 yesterday at Silver City, N.M.

Esene hit 10 of his 13 shots from the field, and all three of his misses came from beyond the arc. Brian Graham contributed 20 points and Alex Cabagnot chipped in 12.

The Vulcans improved to 22-3 overall and 8-3 in the Pacific West Conference. The Mustangs, who play Brigham Young-Hawaii in Laie on Tuesday, dropped to 6-16 and 1-10.

Esmeralda speaking at QB Club

Kapolei athletic director Elden Esmeralda and KHON reporter Ken Wilson will speak at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

The program starts at noon at the Pagoda Ballroom with lunch served at 11:30 a.m.

U.S. Women's Open qualifying May 16

Qualifying for the 2005 U.S. Women's Open Championship will be held at the Ko Olina Golf Club in Kapolei on May 16. Entries must be received by the USGA by May 4. The cost to enter is $125.

To obtain an entry application, call the USGA at (908)-234-2300 or entire online at www.usga.org. Entrants must have a handicap index that doesn't exceed 4.4.

The 2005 U.S. Women's Open is June 23-26 at the Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo.
