Kalaheo leaps into
OIA semis

Winners of 10 of the past 11 Oahu Interscholastic Association championships, the Kalaheo Mustangs proved that even with a notably young roster, they're still the team to beat.

David Moore, the only senior who sees significant playing time for the Mustangs, scored a game-high 22 points and was 8-for-8 from the free-throw line in the final 2:30 to help clinch a berth in the OIA semifinals with a 59-48 victory over Pearl City last night at Campbell.

"It was kind of ugly out there," Kalaheo head coach Chico Furtado said. "I was trying to work the officials to get some calls out there, especially when they're more physical and got behind towards the end."

The Mustangs converted 19 of 26 free throws in the fourth quarter, with most coming in the last 3 minutes, as the Chargers were forced to foul to try to make up a 10-point deficit they had most of the second half.

"We were just in too deep of a hole," Pearl City head coach Lionel Villarmia said. "Especially against a team like Kalaheo, you can't get in that position."

The importance of the regular season came into play last night, as the rested Mustangs were able to push the tempo and wear out the Chargers, who had played the previous night in an opening-round win against Kailua. Kalaheo earned a first-round bye.

"I could see it in our shots that we were tired," Villarmia said. "We came out in a match-up zone and even switched to a 2-3 zone to try to rest our guys up for a second-half run, but we came out flat in the third quarter, which killed us."

Leading 22-16 at halftime, Kalaheo opened the second half with an 11-2 run, which included two 3-pointers from Moore, that opened up a 15-point lead.

"I think early on we came out tentative on defense, not wanting to give up an easy layup or put ourselves in a bind," Furtado said. "Eventually we decided to pick it up and push the tempo on defense and that was key."

Ernest Vidinha led one last Chargers run, as his three-point play with 5 minutes remaining cut the Mustangs' lead to six. But that's when Kalaheo turned to its senior as Moore helped ice the game from the line with eight straight free throws.

"There's only three seniors on this team and I'm the only one who gets significant playing time, so I've just gotta carry this team to the promised land," Moore said. "This was the most important game of the season because it got us into states and bought us an extra five games or so."

All four semifinal teams from the OIA advance to the state tournament.

"This was so big for us because we're so young that the exposure of playing in the OIA and state tournaments will really help this team mature, and to get these extra five games, we're just going to enjoy it," Furtado said.

The Mustangs will look to extend their OIA championship streak to five as they take on Campbell in the semifinals Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at McKinley.
