Isle stars in past years
It's wonderful that a Best Hawaiian Music Album with lyrics mainly in Hawaiian will finally be included in the Grammys. The 47th Grammy Awards show will be held in L.A. tomorrow. Island nominees are: The Brothers Cazimero, Amy Gilliom and Willie K, Keali'i Reichel, Ho'okena and Charles Brotman. But it's unfortunate that many Hawaiian singers and musicans over the past 47 years never had a chance to be recognized. Among those who might have been nominated if the category had been included earlier are: Gabby Pahinui, Sonny Chillingworth, Atta Isaacs, Ray Kane, Ledward Ka'apana and Leonard Kwan for slack key brilliance and singing; Eddie Kamae and the Sons of Hawaii, Al Kealoha Perry and his Singing Surfriders, Makaha Sons of Niihau/Makaha Sons, Peter Moon's Sunday Manoa, Richard Kauhi Quartet, Kahauanu Lake Trio and Buddy Fo and the Invitations for groups; singers Genoa Keawe, Alfred Apaka, Nina Kealiiwahamana, Emma Veary, Mahi Beamer, Beamer Brothers, Palani Vaughan, Charles Davis, Ed Kenney, Melveen Leed, Danny Kaleikini, Marlene Sai, George Paoa, Lena Machado and Haunani Kahalewai. And certainly Don Ho deserves some kind of honor. He's the man who put island music on the map and opened the door nationally for Hawaiian acts. The new category should spur isle acts to make Hawaiian albums ... |
