Defensive end John Henderson of the Jacksonville Jaguars will replace Richard Seymour of the New England Patriots in Sunday's Pro Bowl at Aloha Stadium.
Seymour, who has a minor knee injury, opted out of the game. But he did make the trip, arriving with Super Bowl champion teammates Tom Brady (quarterback), Larry Izzo (special teams), and Tedy Bruschi (linebacker) late Tuesday.
They joined Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri, who arrived late Monday, at yesterday's AFC practice.
Seymour was selected for his third straight Pro Bowl after recording 39 tackles and five sacks this season. His pass-rushing abilities were a major factor in the Patriots' dominant defensive play on the way to their third Super Bowl victory in four seasons.
"Any time you (get chosen for) the Pro Bowl, you always want to leave the Super Bowl and come over here," Seymour said while his AFC teammates practiced yesterday. "When you come over, everyone is congratulating you. It's just the ultimate high."
Henderson will appear in his first Pro Bowl. He made 98 tackles for the Jaguars this season, sharing the team lead with 5 1/2 sacks while starting all 16 games.
Brady is making his second Pro Bowl appearance.
"This is a great time for us," Brady said. "It's going to be special for us."
Where art thou?: Bruschi said he and his teammates will miss defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel, who left the team after the Super Bowl to take the head-coaching position of the Cleveland Browns.
"He was the constant," Bruschi said. "He was the consistent force in the meeting room. We're a bunch of jokers, and he made sure things were serious when they had to be."
Joe on Norm: ESPN analyst Joe Theismann said he likes Norm Chow's chances for success as in the NFL. Chow, a Punahou graduate and former coach at Waialua High School, paid his dues for decades as a college assistant and is widely recognized as one of the top offensive minds in the nation.
"There are three levels of football -- college, USC and then the pros," said Theismann, who played at Trojans rival Notre Dame. "USC is like a semi-pro team. You watch them and there's a distinct difference. Norm Chow is ready for the NFL, which is the next step up from USC."
Now appearing: Not only Pro Bowl NFL players are in the islands.
Guards Toniu Fonoti (San Diego Chargers) and Kynan Forney (Atlanta Falcons) were scheduled to visit the Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility this afternoon.
Fonoti is a Kahuku High School graduate. Forney played his college ball at the University of Hawaii.
Forney is also scheduled to sign autographs at a tailgate event in the Aloha Stadium parking lot near Gate 4 before Sunday's game. He is scheduled to be there from noon to 1:30 p.m. Former UH defensive tackle Isaac Sopoaga (San Francisco 49ers) and former Saint Louis School running back Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala (Jacksonville Jaguars) will appear from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
