Hawaii is No. 2 in Volleyball magazine poll

The University of Hawaii (8-1) volleyball team moved up to No. 2 in the Volleyball magazine poll, which is released once a month. The Warriors were No. 3 in the magazine's last poll.

UCLA (10-1) is No. 1.

The weekly USA Today/AVCA poll is expected to come out today. The Warriors were ranked No. 3 in the poll released last week.

Kansas topples Hawaii-Hilo in baseball

Hawaii-Hilo could only muster four hits against three Kansas pitchers yesterday in a 12-3 baseball loss to the Jayhawks at Wong Stadium.

Sean Tamura, Chris Campbell, Johnny Dudoit and Jimmy Crider had the hits for the Vulcans, who dropped to 0-9.

Kansas, which pounded 13 hits off of five Hawaii-Hilo hurlers, improved to 4-0.

Vulcans' Cabagnot is player of the week

Hawaii-Hilo's Alex Cabagnot averaged 20 points and seven assists in two wins over Brigham Young-Hawaii last week and was named the PacWest Conference Player of the Week.

He scored 28 points with six assists and five steals in the first win. He had 12 points with eight assists in the second victory.

U.S. Open golf qualifying at 4 Hawaii sites

Qualifying for the U.S. Open golf championship will be held at four sites in Hawaii.

The qualifiers are May 13 at Turtle Bay's Palmer Course, May 14 at the Kaanapali North Course on Maui, May 19 at the Poipu Bay Resort Course on Kauai, and May 23 at the Waikoloa Beach Course on the Big Island.

The U.S. Open is scheduled for June 16-19 at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C.

Ching hired to Hawaii USTA post

The United States Tennis Association Hawaii Pacific Section hired Donna Ching as its new director of recreational tennis.

Ching will be responsible for coordinating tennis assemblies with groups and schools and introducing tennis at new areas in the Hawaii Pacific Section.

Ching has a masters degree in education from Chaminade University.
