Iolani still at the
top of S-B poll
Iolani continued to dominate the Star-Bulletin Top 10 poll, collecting all 12 first-place votes. The Raiders are 12-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and 24-2 overall.
Baldwin, now 10-0 in the Maui Interscholastic League, leapfrogged Punahou into the No. 2 spot this week. The Bears posted wins over Kaahumanu Hou and Seabury Hall. With the league's modified second-round schedule set to be announced by tomorrow, the Bears are three wins from clinching a state-tournament berth.
Kamehameha moved up a notch to No. 6 after posting wins over University and Damien. The Warriors also played No. 1 Iolani to a close loss early last week.
Kauai made the biggest leap, moving three spots to No. 7. The Red Raiders are one win from clinching the Kauai Interscholastic Federation second-round title and a state berth.
Kohala and Konawaena jumped into the Top 10. Kohala made the long trip to Hilo and beat the Vikings 83-77 on Friday night. The Cowboys, now 12-1 in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, share first place with Konawaena and Waiakea. With the regular season over, the BIIF will draw straws to determine the tiebreaker matchups.
This morning, one of the three teams will get a bye through tomorrow's game. Tomorrow's winner will then play the bye team Wednesday.
Wednesday's winner earns a top seed in the league's postseason tournament, and more importantly, a state-tournament berth. On top of that, all three teams will begin the postseason tournament Friday.
That could mean a wicked week of travel for Kohala and Konawaena, since the tournament is at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo -- more than 2 hours away by bus.
Hilo, which fell into fourth place after losing to Kohala and Konawaena, could have the home scenario it needs. The Vikings are dealing with illness and injury and the departure of center Sam Rosen, who left the team recently.
