Soul mate seminar set

Relationships can be confusing, frustrating and intimidating. The rules relating to dating have changed dramatically in the past few years, making the search for a meaningful relationship daunting.

So if you're tired of meeting Mr. or Ms. Wrong, newly single or have nearly given up on love, Unity Church of Hawaii is hosting -- just for you and, oh, hundreds of other lovelorn souls -- a "Manifesting Your Soul Mate Seminar."

The seminar, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, aims to share ways of creating and maintaining a loving relationship, while offering tips on how to act when you meet that special someone and how to handle various dating situations. All are welcome.

Singing for love

The Sounds of Aloha Chorus is offering singing valentines on Valentine's Day and the weekend leading up to it.

Barbershop quartets will be make your special deliveries from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Monday, and 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday.

The quartets will present a card, a rose and two songs at restaurants, workplaces, hospitals, residences or whatever romantic rendezvous spot you can dream up. A $50 donation is requested.

Express love in haiku

Nohea Gallery is sponsoring a Valentine's Day Haiku Writing Contest.

To enter, submit a humorous or romantic poem in 17 syllables or less to the gallery at Ward Warehouse by noon Thursday. Include your name, address and day and night telephone numbers.

Haiku usually comprise three lines with a five-seven-five syllable pattern by line. Haiku are written in the present tense and express emotion by connecting two or more images in a fresh, insightful way.

Contest winners must be willing to recite their poems at 6 p.m. Monday -- Valentine's Day -- at the gallery.

First-prize winners will receive their choice of a pair of sterling silver maile or ti leaf design earrings by Ulana o Kukui, or a koa box by Richardo Dellera. Second- and third-prize winners will receive handmade glass hearts.

Sex, lies and sweet stuff

Looking for something more than flowers to give to that special someone for Valentine's Day? How about a little sex, lies or cotton candy?

The Leeward Community College Drama Program presents its ninth annual short-play production in two separate programs at the LCC Lab Theatre -- one entitled "Sex, Lies," and the other, "Cotton Candy," on Friday and Saturday.

Directed by 12 LCC students, "Sex, Lies" contains adult content, while "Cotton Candy" is suitable for audiences over age 13 (though discretion is advised for language and subject matter). More than 40 actors make up the casts of this all-student production.

"Sex, Lies" will be staged at 4 p.m. Friday and 8 p.m. Saturday, while "Cotton Candy" plays at 8 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday.

Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the Diamond Head-makai entrance of the theater. Seating is limited to 70.

Essay contest

In the history of amor, are there three more dreaded words than "Let's be friends"? Those words need not spell the end of love -- we hope.

For Valentine's Day we're looking for your true stories of friendships that blossomed into love. In 500 words or less, tell us your real-life "When Harry Met Sally" story. We don't care how many years you spent in friendship limbo. All we ask is that you keep the stories clean for this PG-rated newspaper. The story that melts our icy hearts wins a two-night stay at the W, dinner for two at Diamond Head Grill and flowers from Watanabe Floral. The loving couple's story will appear on Feb. 14.

The deadline for essays is Thursday. Be sure to include your name, address and telephone number.
