Vulcans rally past Seasiders

Brian Graham scored 19 points and hit four free throws with less than 20 seconds remaining as the 16th-ranked Hawaii-Hilo men's basketball team rallied to beat Brigham Young-Hawaii 90-86 yesterday in a nonconference game at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

The Vulcans trailed 77-69 with five minutes remaining before going on an 11-3 run to tie it at 80 with 2:20 remaining.

Osadonor Esene finished with 17 points, West Hawthorne 13, Alex Cabagnot 12 and Justin Dobson 11 for the Vulcans (20-2). Cabagnot also dished out eight assists. Michael Stowell scored 23 points and Jake Chrisman added 21 to lead the Seasiders (11-6).

Sea Warriors open season with win

The Hawaii Pacific baseball team opened the season with a 2-1 win over Longwood yesterday at Keehi Lagoon Field.

The Sea Warriors then dropped the second game of the doubleheader 7-3.

» At Hilo, Kodiak Quick threw a complete-game three-hitter to lead Kansas past Hawaii-Hilo 4-0 at Simmons Field yesterday.

Quick struck out eight Vulcans (0-6) and walked none.

Seasiders beat up Mastodons in season opener

The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's and women's tennis teams blanked NCAA Division I Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne yesterday in their season openers at Laie.

The top-ranked women's team won 6-0 and extended its winning streak to 102. The ninth-ranked men's team downed the Mastodons 4-0

» Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) won three singles matches and the doubles point to beat the University of Hawaii men's tennis team 4-3 yesterday at the UH Tennis Complex.

Ducks defeat Rainbow Wahine

The University of Hawaii softball team dropped its first game of the year yesterday, falling 10-2 to No. 14 Oregon at the Paradise Classic at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The game was called after six innings due to the mercy rule as the Rainbow Wahine used pitchers Jessica Morton, Melissa Coogan, Shannon Tabion and Paula Blanning on the mound.

The tournament concludes today with final pool play matches starting at 10 a.m.

Yanagisawa takes over top spot at Pearl Open

Will Yanagisawa moved into the lead of the Hawaii Pearl Open yesterday at Pearl Country Club.

The California native, who played collegiate golf with Tiger Woods at Stanford, shot a 66 in the second round to lead at 11 under par. Parker McLachlin and Don Berry are one stroke behind, followed by Japanese pro Kunihiro Kamii and Travis Toyama, last year's Hawaii state high school champion.

Sakura Yokomine, one of three females in the tournament, is 1 under. The second round went unfinished because of a late start and will commence today.

The top 80 golfers after the second round will advance to today's third and final round.
