Yoro to join Oregon
in the fall
Hawaii's high school soccer players are beginning to decide where they plan to attend college and continue their soccer careers. The process will last through the spring and into the summer for some.
Sarah Yoro will sign with Oregon. After recruiting trips to Montana and Oregon, she cancelled trips to San Diego State and Maryland ater deciding to commit early to the Ducks.
"I felt everything was genuine at Oregon, that it was the right place for me, said, Yoro, a striker for Mililani. "The most important thing was what I want to major in, journalism. They have a really good program there."
There are three Hawaii players on the Ducks roster, Nicole Garbin and Kami Kapaku from Baldwin, and former Trojan teammate Mele French.
The Ducks, 3-13-3 a year ago, have a new head coach in Tara Erickson, who was Yoro's Olympic Development Program coach last year.
Britta Bourne will sign a letter of intent with the U. of Montana Grizzlies where she will receive a full athletic scholarship.
"The Montana coach (Neil Sedgwick) contacted me over the summer and I took a trip there. I really like it and it seemed like the right place for me." said Bourne, who plans to major in physical therapy.
The Academy of the Pacific student did not play for Pac-Five this year because she is recovering from her third ACL surgery, this on the left leg following two on the right.
Bourne is an ODP veteran having made the Region IV pool in 2001 and 2002 and the national pool in 2001.
The Grizzlies were 8-8-2 last year and reached the Big Sky Conference title game, losing to Weber State 1-0.
Justin Kim, a member of four consecutive Hawaii High School Athletic Association state championship teams at Mililani, took a year off after graduating from high school to decide on a college. He worked on improving his skills with the Honolulu Bulls and was a key player on the Bulls' 19-and-under national champions last summer.
One coach who watched Kim play last summer was Bowling Green's Fred Thompson.
As soon as the letter on intent arrives, Kim will sign with the Falcons, 0-19 a year ago.
"I have a good relationship with the coach. They had a young team last year with eight freshmen starters. They used to be a top program, going to the NCAA Tournament every year and I want to help that happen again," said Kim, a center midfielder.
Callum Trigg-Smith will play for St. Mary's (Calif.) next year. He missed his senior season at Punahou after injurying his right anterior cruciate ligament.
