HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL
Trojans earn spotBlaine Kanno hit the go-ahead basket with less than a minute left and Mililani held on for dear life in a 57-55 overtime win over Waianae last night. A raucous crowd at Mililani saw the Trojans earn the sixth and final playoff berth in the Oahu Interscholastic Association West. Both teams finished 5-5, but Mililani goes into the postseason due to last night's head-to-head win. Scott Neumann, hitting big shots despite tendinitis in both knees, led the host Trojans with 17 points. "It's a brand-new season for us now," said Neumann, who shot 6-for-18 from the field. "I feel relieved," said Mililani coach Mike Coito, who has guided the Trojans to the playoffs in each of his five seasons at the helm. Junior Faliuga paced Waianae with 24 points on 10-of-14 field-goal shooting, and grabbed nine rebounds. Xiro Naovalath had 16 points, four steals and three assists. Perhaps the biggest factor in the game, aside from Mililani's loud home crowd, was free-throw shooting. Mililani made just four of nine attempts. Waianae, aggressive offensively all night, made just 11 of 24 tries and committed 20 turnovers. Naovalath, feeling the effects of the flu, made only four of his 10 attempts from the line. He shot 5-for-12 from the field. "We should've won. We practice our free throws every day, but we were off," Faliuga said. "We lost it. We had a helluva season," Naovalath added. "The playoffs would've been fun." Neumann and the Trojans, who committed 18 turnovers, felt fortunate. "I was holding my butt when their free throws were rimming out," Neumann said. "If those go in, it's a different game." Kanno, who finished with six points, drove for a 6-foot runner that hit all net to give Mililani a 56-55 lead with 52 seconds left. "I knew Xiro was getting tired from all the work on offense, so I figured I had to take him," Kanno said. Waianae, which had rallied from a nine-point deficit to tie the game in regulation, had two chances to regain the lead. Naovalath drove and missed a layup in traffic, but Jordan Manuel rebounded under the basket. His putback attempt was short, however, and Mililani forward Jonovan Santos rebounded. Santos was fouled on the play -- Naovalath's fifth personal -- with 7 seconds remaining. After a Waianae time out, Santos' free throw tumbled in for a 57-55 lead. His second shot, however, missed. Waianae guard Nate Kahala rebounded and went coast to coast. He pulled up in front of Ken Moses, but his 7-footer missed as time expired.
