Kahuku beats Kalaheo
to take OIA East lead

Okesene Ale scored 15 points, including a key basket with 49 seconds left, as Kahuku rallied past Kalaheo 57-55 last night at McKinley Student Council Gym.

The win lifted Kahuku into sole possession of first place in the Oahu Interscholastic Association East at 9-1 (16-2 overall). "Our coaches told us we had to bring it home. We hadn't beaten this team in 15 years," Ale said.

Point guard Clinton Parks was especially happy for coach Nathan James. "Everyone said coach couldn't win the big one. We wanted to get this for him," said Parks, who scored 14 points. Kevin Unga also finished with 14 points.

It was a key bounce-back game for Kahuku, which lost at home to Roosevelt over the weekend. "The difference was we came out with more intensity and focus," Ale said.

Kalaheo, the three-time defending league champion, dropped to 8-2 in league play (14-11 overall). David Moore led Kalaheo with 16 points. Marvin Judd scored 12, while Tate Brown and Chris Tumaneng tallied 10 apiece.

Kahuku derailed itself by making just 11 of its 26 free-throw attempts, but timely plays down the stretch helped. Leading 54-53 with 49 seconds left, the Red Raiders isolated Ale on the low post for an inbounds play from the sideline. The 6-1 junior drove around Moore for a layup to give his team a 3-point cushion.

Moore managed to draw a foul from Ale on a drive outside the key. Moore sank both free throws to bring Kalaheo within 56-55 with 10 seconds left. A second later, the Mustangs fouled Parks.

Parks made one of his two foul shots, and Tumaneng rebounded for Kalaheo. Devin Unga, however, poked the ball away and Parks recovered the loose ball. He went back to the line with 4 seconds left.

Parks missed both attempts, but Ale came through with an offensive board. Time expired after he missed his putback attempt.

For the second straight game, Kahuku's offense had a slow start. Moore hit a 3-pointer, and later, a pull-up jumper from the foul line to give Kalaheo a 10-3 lead with 5 seconds left in the first quarter.

Parks salvaged the quarter for Kahuku by swishing in a 49-footer from beyond halfcourt as the buzzer sounded. The Red Raiders junked their matchup zone in favor of a man-to-man defense and came to life. Kevin Unga scored on back-to-back layups to give Kahuku a 14-13 lead midway through the second quarter.

From that point on, the teams played even in the second. Tyler Caswell hit a 16-footer from the right wing, and Judd scored his first points of the game on an open 3-pointer from the right corner to give Kalaheo a 27-25 lead going into the half.

Brown came alive in the third quarter, driving for a bucket and hustling for a putback as Kalaheo opened a 38-30 lead. Kahuku patiently chipped away, however, with repeated entry passes to forward Kevin Unga on the low post. The junior scored on an alley-oop lob, a layup and a pair of free throws as the Red Raiders pulled within 40-39.

Moore sank two of three free throws as Kalaheo took a 42-39 lead into the final quarter, but Kahuku kept plugging away. Devin Unga tied the game at 43 with a layup off a feed from Parks.

Castle improved to 6-4 in OIA East play (13-7 overall) and kept its playoff hopes alive.

McKinley slipped to 0-10 in league play. Kapena Quisano led McKinley with 17 points on 6-for-16 shooting. He made three of his seven 3-point tries.

The host Tigers looked stellar in the first 10 minutes, taking an 18-12 lead against Castle's half-court man and full court trap defenses.

Castle didn't shoot well against McKinley's 2-3 zone, but the Knights used their fast break go on an 8-0 run. Jonathan Horner hit a bank shot on a fast break, and then drilled a 3-pointer from the right wing as Castle went ahead 20-18 with 4:41 to play in the second quarter.

The lead changed hands three more times, with Castle taking the lead for good at 23-22 on Scott Argue's driving layup. The Knights finished the half off with a 9-0 run to take a 32-23 lead at intermission.

Castle put the game out of reach in the third quarter, extending the lead to 23 points.
