Champions crowned at Waikoloa

Paul Goldstein won his second Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Challenger title, defeating Cecil Mamiit 6-2, 6-2 in the men's singles final yesterday on the Kohala Coast.

With the win, Goldstein broke the all-time USTA Pro Circuit career victory record.

On the women's side, top-seeded Marie-Eve Pelletier won her first Challenger since turning pro four years ago, defeating seventh-seeded Hana Sromova 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in a match that took 2 hours and 37 minutes.

Andre Sa and Eric Taino won the men's doubles title while Natalie Grandin and Kaysie Smashey took home the women's doubles crown.

Stewart upset in Pipeline bodysurfing

Todd Sells upset 10-time Pipeline bodysurfing champion Mike Stewart to claim the Patagonia Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic championship yesterday at Ehukai Beach.

Sells placed in the top six of the event in two of the previous four years, finishing as high as third in 2001 before yesterday's victory.

Rainbows want to take you back

The Hawaii athletic department has launched a season long "Take Me Back to the Ball Game" campaign for Rainbow baseball.

The first event is "Season Ticket Holder Appreciation Weekend" at the team's season-opening series against Alabama, Feb. 10-13. All UH season-ticket holders in the sports of baseball, basketball, football and volleyball qualify for a two-for-one ticket offer beginning Feb. 7 when individual tickets go on sale. Tickets can be purchased at the Stan Sheriff Center box office.

The campaign will include additional promotional contests, giveaways and group activities designed to create a more fun-filled atmosphere for the fans.

Season tickets can also be purchased now at the SSC box office, online at www.HawaiiAthletics.com or by calling 944-2697. Tickets in the blue and orange sections cost $185, plus a $60 premium fee.

In the red section, season tickets cost $145 for adults, $100 for senior citizens and UH students with a valid ID, and $110 for students ages 4-18.
