HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS

Buffanblu bust out

Jeremiah Ostrowski scored 24 points as No. 2 Punahou outlasted Kamehameha 71-58 last night at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.

The win lifted Punahou to 8-1 in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play (18-7 overall). With only Iolani in front of Punahou, and all other ILH teams with at least three losses each, the Buffanblu moved closer to a state tournament berth.

Punahou disciplines 2 coaches

Punahou School has disciplined two wrestling coaches following an incident in which a 15-year-old student was injured.

Kena Heffernan has been removed as assistant coach and head coach Matt Oney has been suspended until Feb. 7. Heffernan, a former all-state wrestler and all-star football player for the Buffanblu, will remain at the school as a seventh-grade teacher.

His status in the athletic department will be reviewed at the end of the year, according to associate athletic director Kale Ane.

The incident occurred on Jan. 18 at the Punahou athletic complex during a practice that was termed "brawl day" (a no-holds-barred training session with coaches taking on students).

The family of the injured athlete has hired attorney David Gierlach, saying their son was brutalized during practice. Punahou officials say the student suffered a bloody nose and a cut on his lip, and did not miss any school.

"Kids wrestling with coaches has always been part of practices," said Ane. "But the 'brawl day' is something relatively new and it will not be continued.

"The school feels comfortable with the decisions made regarding the situation. We have talked with the team and the parents."

Laurel Bowers Husain, Punahou's director of development and communications, issued a statement saying school officials "deeply regret the impact that this training had on one of our students and have taken steps to ensure that he receives the care and support needed to overcome this incident."

The student has received counseling sessions with a clinical psychologist.

Danny Cho added 16 points, and Brenton Lee and Spencer McLachlin added eight apiece for Punahou. The Buffanblu visit Damien on Tuesday.

Kamehameha was led by Ikaika Hardie, who pumped in a season-high 27 points, including 19 in the first half. Unfortunately for the Warriors, nobody else came close to scoring in double figures.

The Warriors dropped to 5-4 in the ILH, 11-8 overall.

It was a far cry from the first league meeting between the two schools, when Punahou escaped with a last-minute 46-43 victory. Ostrowski finished with just seven points in that game, but had a three-point play to win the game.

"We had better execution tonight with our zone offense," Ostrowski said. "We only knew man offense then. We've learned to find holes, and this time we knocked down shots."

A 13-3 run turned a relatively close game into a 52-35 Punahou lead in the third quarter. Kamehameha responded with a run of its own. The Warriors outscored Punahou 14-3, including a tough left-handed drive by Hardie, to pull within 55-49 with 5:42 remaining.

Kamehameha, ranked sixth in the Star-Bulletin Top 10, simply refused to surrender.

"They have a lot of athleticism, a lot of quick guards," Ostrowski said.

Punahou snuffed out the run at that point with an 11-1 blitz. Ostrowski often beat Kamehameha's full-court pressure, including double-teams, on his own. The Buffanblu led by 13 with 59 seconds left when they emptied the bench.

Punahou relied on a 1-3-1 zone, daring the Warriors to connect from long range consistently.

"It's a pretty good zone for covering the outside," Ostrowski said. "And it gives us a chance to rest."
