COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Moody helps Tulsa
rout Rainbow Wahine

Tulsa shook off its first home defeat (Thursday to San Jose State) by shredding the Hawaii defense en route to an 83-64 victory in a Western Athletic Conference women's basketball game yesterday in Tulsa, Okla.

The Golden Hurricane dominated the final 30 minutes at the Donald W. Reynolds Center, much to the delight of 1,850 fans on National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

The Wahine (8-8 , 4-5 WAC) seemed to have no defense at times, especially in trying to stop Tulsa's outside shooting. The Golden Hurricane drained a season-high 10 3-pointers, five by 6-foot-2 junior forward Megan Moody, who tied her career high set against UH last year.

For the second consecutive game, the Wahine were guilty of 26 turnovers. That glaring statistic negates the fact that UH had just one fewer rebound than Tulsa (14-5, 6-3) and shot the same from the field as the Golden Hurricane (41 percent).

The first 10 minutes were even. Hawaii led 20-17 on a jump shot by Jade Abele off an assist by Janevia Taylor with 10:33 left in the half.

Both teams then went cold from the field, but the UH freeze lasted longer. Tandem Mays' jumper put Tulsa ahead for good 21-20 with 9:53 to go and Moody hit a trey with 6:41 left on the clock.

UH ended a 7 minute, 9 second drought when Taylor's jumper fell with 3:24 left. During that spell, the Wahine committed five turnovers and were 0-for-8 from the field.

In the final 10 minutes of the half, the Golden Hurricane outscored UH 18-6.

"They just took over," Hawaii coach Jim Bolla said.

Nothing changed in the second half. After the first 2 minutes, the Wahine trailed by 10 points on Moody's fourth 3-pointer. Then, with 11:47 to play, Emily Jaskowiak's layup gave Tulsa a 21-point lead at 55-34.

Hawaii made one brief run midway through the half to cut the deficit to under 20 points. The 19-point setback is the Wahine's worst since losing to Fresno State by 22 in the WAC opener.

"We turned it over 26 times again," Bolla lamented. "We made bad decisions and it just multiplied on us. Then we came out flat in the second half.

"Tulsa was one step ahead of us the whole game and they dominated the boards in the second half. They played very well and we didn't."

Moody's game-high 26 points is her career high. Tulsa reserve LeAnn Upshaw grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds.

The 83 points is the most the Golden Hurricane have scored this season and the most UH has allowed.

Amy Sanders led the Wahine with 18 points, the third consecutive game the junior guard has topped UH in scoring.

"We've got some time and we'll figure out what to do to regroup," Bolla said.

The Wahine host San Jose State on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Notes: Jade Abele's six assists moved her into ninth place on the career list with 267, one behind Jana Gabrielova. Abele is 10th on the career free-throws-made list with 245. ... The Wahine extended their streak of games making at least one 3-point shot to 91.
