No surprises
at Turtle Bay
Championship

Hale Irwin holds a two-shot lead
as he tries to win the tournament
for the fifth straight time

If you're surprised Hale Irwin and Dana Quigley are in the final group of today's $1.6 million Turtle Bay Championship, then you haven't been paying attention.

Irwin continued his quest yesterday to become the first golfer to win the same event five consecutive times with a stellar 6-under 66 to move to 11-under 133 for the tournament. He holds a two-shot lead over Allen Doyle and is three shots removed from Quigley, Keith Fergus and Gil Morgan.

Doyle and Quigley fashioned 4-under 68s to earn their spots in the final threesome. Doyle overcame a poor approach at the 18th that landed in the water guarding the front of the par-5 finishing hole. After retreating down the fairway 60 yards for his fourth shot, he rolled in a 25-footer for par to finish at 9-under 135 through 36 holes.

Quigley, still riding high from his MasterCard Championship win last week on the Big Island, was the first in at 8-under 136, therefore putting him eye-to-eye with Irwin on a course he loves even more than Quigley does Hualalai Golf Club.

Fergus shared the first-round lead with Doyle and Irwin, but couldn't match either golfer yesterday, finishing with a steady 3-under 69. He walked off the 18th feeling a lot better about his round than Morgan, who spent most of the day either tied with Irwin or in the lead.

A three-shot swing at the 18th proved to be his undoing. Morgan hit his drive at the closing hole into the water, then compounded the problem with a series of bad chips and putts that left him with a double-bogey 7. Morgan still finished 3 under for the round, and at 8-under 136, still has a chance to get back into the chase .

Don Pooley and Larry Nelson are on the outside looking in at 7-under 137. Pooley fired a 5-under 67 that included an eagle at the 18th to move into a tie for sixth with Nelson, who had a 4-under 68. In all the previous tournaments in the island chain this year -- the Mercedes, Sony and MasterCard -- the eventual winner came from four shots back.

But don't look for that to happen today. In 28 previous senior circuit events where Irwin held or shared the lead entering the final round, he has won 21 of them. And with history in the making -- no one on the PGA or Champions tours has ever won the same event five consecutive times -- it would seem fate is in Irwin's golf bag.

"It's just one in a row I'm trying to win and that's how I'm trying to think about it," Irwin said of his historic run. "If you get caught up in that, and I know it makes really nice print, but that's just not the way you set your mind.

"How am I going to prep? Well, I'm going to prep the same as I did last week and try not to get too far ahead of myself. You learn that lesson all the time, you know, just like yesterday. You birdie the first four holes and you're trying not to let the horse run or you run into the wall."

Allen Doyle will play in the final group today with leader Hale Irwin and Dana Quigley. Doyle is two shots behind Irwin.

Those who have tried to wrestle this trophy out of Irwin's hands the past five years ran into a brick wall themselves. In 2003, it was Tom Kite who landed on the rocks at 18 to assure Irwin a win. In 2002, Irwin beat Gary McCord in a playoff and had few problems holding off John Jacobs to win in 2001 and Joe Inman to capture the 2000 event, the last time it was played on Maui.

But if there's one guy who could cause Irwin some problems today, it's Quigley, who has pocketed nearly $1 million at the MasterCard Championship. Irwin has won a little more than a million at this PGA Tour spot, and $3.5 million in the island chain overall. Today, something's gotta give.

"It should be fun playing with Hale tomorrow," Quigley said. "Everybody knows what he has done in this tournament and at this golf course, which sets up so well for him. He loves to cut the ball. I just love to play. Let's go out and have some fun."

Irwin managed three birdies on the front and three more on the back, including a shot out of the greenside bunker at the par-3 13th that rolled in for a routine 2. The 59-year-old had nine one-putts en route to 23 for the day. He feels confident that he's the man to beat entering today's final round.

"It helps me get myself more into it," Irwin said of leading after 36 holes. "I want to make it where they have to go out and beat me. I don't want to back up. I like the lead. I'm comfortable in the lead. I think at times it makes me play better."

The field didn't play as well as Friday, although benign conditions remained for a second straight day. While the rest of the island was dealing with the wind and rain, Turtle Bay Resort remained remarkably dry.

A total of 46 golfers are 1-under 143 or better entering today's final round. A dozen golfers are within five shots of the lead, including Jerry Pate, Dick Mast and Wayne Levi, who are part of a group at 6-under 138.
