Singles finals in Waikoloa Challenger today

Paul Goldstein will look to repeat his 2000 championship performance in today's Waikoloa USTA Challenger on the Kohala Coast.

Goldstein will face fellow American Cecil Mamiit after defeating Jeff Salzenstein 6-4, 6-4 in the men's singles semifinals yesterday.

Top-seed Marie-Eve Pelletier of Canada defeated Rossana Neffa-De Los Rios to meet Hana Sromova in the women's singles final today.

Natalie Grandin of South Africa and American Kaysie Smashey won the women's doubles title by defeating Lauren Breadmore and Ayumi Takase 6-3, 6-4.

Whiting's double-double leads Silverswords

Zack Whiting scored 20 points and dished out 10 assists as Chaminade defeated Hawaii Pacific 81-69 in a PacWest Conference game yesterday at McCabe Gym.

Chris Reaves had 16 points and Dustin Mittelsteadt added 14 for the Silverswords (12-7, 6-3 PacWest).

After leading 35-31 at halftime, the Silverswords scored nine straight points to start the second half and led by as much as 20.

Finis Harwell scored 17 points and Alex Swerzbin added in 15 to lead HPU (7-11, 1-7).

Vulcans fall short twice in doubleheader

Hawaii-Hilo remained winless after dropping a baseball doubleheader to San Diego yesterday at Francis Wong Stadium.

The Toreros (5-3) won the first game 10-7 and the second game 5-4. Kamehameha alum Keoni Ruth and Mililani alum Gavin Ng each went 1-for-3 in the win. Johnny Dudoit went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs in the loss.

In the second game, Ryan Lilly homered in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning as the Toreros rallied. Ng scored twice while Ruth had two hits. Dudoit went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Vulcans (0-5).

Rain makes Hawaii softball game go away

Yesterday's softball game between the University of Hawaii and its alumnae was rained out.

The Rainbow Wahine host Hawaii Pacific in a scrimmage on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and begins the regular season against Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne on Thursday in the Paradise Classic.

Young, Jaffee headline Quarterback Club

KITV news anchor Pamela Young and exercise instructor and former state legislator Mindy Jaffee will speak at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon.

Joining them will be University of Hawaii assistant swimming coach David Struthers. The luncheon starts at 11:30 at the Pagoda Hotel Ballroom, with the program starting at noon. The public is invited.

Soccer fundraiser scheduled for Feb. 6

The Hawaii Soccer Federation is hosting a Soccer Slam Fundraiser from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Ocean Club at Restaurant Row on Feb. 6.

The $10 ticket is good for free pupus, soda and four hours of great dancing along with games and contests.
