Jackson advances at Waikoloa

Second-seeded Jamea Jackson defeated fellow American Jennifer Tuchman 6-0, 6-2 to advance into the third round of the Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Challenger yesterday at the Waikoloa.

In other women's singles action, fourth-seed Rossana Neffa-De-Los-Rios of Paraguay defeated Jessica Nguyen of the United States 6-3,6-1 to advance while fifth-seed Natalie Grandin knocked off Lauren Breadmore 6-2, 6-4.

On the men's side, Paul Goldstein defeated sixth-seeded Amer Delic 6-2, 6-3 while second-seed Justin Gimelstob withdrew due to a back injury. Gimelstob, a former U.S. Davis Cup player, returned from seven month layoff last June and was on a roll prior to coming to Waikoloa.

Matches continue today at 10 a.m. Admission is $5 through Friday and $10 for weekend matches. For more information, contactthe Kohala Tennis Club at 886-1234.

Hawaii teams in NCAA II Regional Poll

Hawaii has three teams in the latest NCAA Division II West Regional Poll released yesterday.

Hawaii-Hilo, with an 18-2 record, checks in at No. 2 behind Seattle Pacific. Brigham Young Hawaii (10-4) and Chaminade (11-7) are Nos. 9 and 10.

Teams must finish eighth or higher in the poll or win the Pacific West Conference championship to qualify for Division II postseason play.

Marathon early registration begins

Early registration for the Honolulu Marathon starts Saturday.

Hawaii residents can register for $15 at Niketown until Feb. 6. After that, registration will be open to local and out-of-state residents. The fee for Hawaii residents is $60 until Oct. 29.

Registration for the Dec. 11 race is starting four months earlier this year in an attempt to attract more competitors. The marathon is the third largest marathon in the United States and sixth largest in the world.

MISO stars in exhibition

The Men's Island Soccer Organization All-Stars will play THESPA Kusatsu of Japan's J-League in an exhibition soccer match Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park Stadium.

There is no admission charge for the match.

Vulcans fall to San Diego in opener

San Diego had 10 runs on nine hits to spoil Hawaii-Hilo's baseball opener last night at Francis Wong Stadium.

The 10-3 win was San Diego's first of the season in four games.

San Diego broke things open with four runs in the fourth, thanks in part to three walks, two steals and two errors. John Matson took the loss for UH-Hilo after five runs and 3 2/3 innings.

Johnny Duduoit went 3--for-4 with a home run to lead the Vulcans offense. UH-Hilo used the game as an experience builder, giving 20 players game action.

The two teams play again tonight at 6.
