Trial set in 2001 rape, killing of Maui woman

Jury selection is scheduled to start March 7 in Massachusetts for six people being tried in the rape and murder of a 22-year-old woman who grew up on Maui.

Io Nachtwey, a King Kekaulike High School graduate, was killed in an act of intimidation and retaliation against her friends who had backed out of gang initiation rites to steal money and valuables, the Suffolk County district attorney's office has charged.

Nachtwey, who was homeless, was taken the night of Nov. 3, 2001, to a railroad bridge near the Charles River and raped by one gang member before she was held down, stabbed and beaten, the district attorney's office said.

Two women have been charged with accessory to murder; four men with murder, including Luis Vasquez of Lawrence, who also faces a charge of rape.

The program aims to preserve and protect Maui's reefs by educating visitors and residents about caring for the resource.

A series of training workshops will be held at the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary Education Center, 726 S. Kihei Road, at 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Feb. 16.

Community members of high school age and older are invited to participate. For more information, contact Liz Foote at 808-669-9062 or lfoote@maui.net.
