Happy 90th, Cecilia!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM!: The Outrigger Canoe Club became the SS Lurline when Cecilia Blackfield, center, celebrated her 90th birthday last Monday with a party for 96 co-hosted by daughters, Pam Blackfield, left, and Karen Blackfield Wallace. Guests' "boarding passes" were checked at the curb by a member of the ship's crew. They posed for souvenir photos before being escorted to the "main salon" for dinner. Several speakers recalled Blackfield's success in helping thwart plans to build high-rises on Magic Island and the slopes of Diamond Head. The icing on the Lurline birthday cake was so tasty some partyers used their fingers to get the last leftover morsels.

DRESSED FOR THE '30S: Cathy Foy, left, wore vintage attire reminiscent of what well-dressed women were wearing when Cecilia Blackfield traveled to Hawaii aboard the Lurline for the first time in 1936.

PROMENADE TALK: John Craft, right, talked with Carolyn Berry and retired U.S. Ambassador Alvin Adams on the "promenade deck" before dinner. Pam Blackfield and Billy Butchkavitz used authentic 1930s island artwork for the invitations, "tickets," "boarding passes," dinner menus and decorations. The lighting effects even created an illusion of moonlight shining over the ship's rail.

LUGGAGE INSPECTORS: Karen Blackfield Wallace, left, surveyed the guests' "luggage" with Rachel McAndrew, center, and her mother, Philomena McAndrews. Each of the 90 guests received one of the miniature suitcases -- each with a personalized name tag and filled with cookies and Godiva chocolates -- when they "disembarked."

MEET THE SHIP'S MUSICIANS!: Aima Aluli McManus, left, Iwalani Kahalewai and Mihana Aluli Souza provided beautiful Hawaiian music during the cocktail hour. A larger all-star Hawaiian group led by Aaron Mahi played for dancing after the speeches had been made, "Happy Birthday" sung and the large Lurline cake cut and distributed.
