Kalaheo gets key OIA
East win over Kaimuki

The matchup of unbeatens boiled down to a matter of cool.

In the end, Kaimuki and Kalaheo lost composure momentarily, but the Mustangs rode a 22-point performance by Marvin Judd to a 56-50 win last night.

David Moore added 12 points for Kalaheo, which improved to 6-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association East (12-9 overall). Kaimuki dropped to 5-1 (11-4 overall).

Kalaheo's steady improvement showed before a home crowd of about 400. Center Tyler Caswell had seven rebounds and point guard Chris Tumaneng had six assists with just one turnover as the Mustangs had a balanced attack against Kaimuki's matchup zone.

Kekoa Onaga scored 12 points with four steals, and Shaun Dela Cazada tallied 11 points off the bench for Kaimuki.

"That was fun. I'm happily surprised," Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said. "We struggled in preseason, but we take care of the ball a little better now. Judd came through, and Elias (David) hit two key jumpers."

Kaimuki committed just 10 turnovers, forcing 14 by the Mustangs.

"But we played horrible defense tonight," coach Kelly Grant said. "This is gonna be one game we need to break down on film. They must've had 15 uncontested shots."

The Mustangs also limited Kaimuki center Jon Torres to nine points thanks to Caswell, a 6-foot-5 sophomore. "The big guy did a good job defending Torres," Furtado said. "And (Tumaneng) did a good job. Everybody's contributing."

Judd, a 5-foot-8 junior, came out firing. He spotted up several times as Kaimuki's matchup zone left holes on the perimeter. He scored 10 points in the first quarter, including a breakaway layup and 3-pointer -- both off feeds from Tumaneng.

Kalaheo called off its fullcourt press, triggering an 8-0 run. The Mustangs led late in the first quarter, 13-6.

Kaimuki stayed in range, tying the game at 13 on a layup by Isaiah Ano. Moments later, the Mustangs went on a 7-0 run, using a 3-point shot by Moore to take a 25-16 lead with 1:05 remaining in the second quarter.

Kalaheo led 27-22 at intermission despite seven turnovers.

Judd scored nine points in the third quarter, including six in a row to give Kalaheo a 38-28 lead.

Dela Cazada hit a turnaround bank shot and scored again on a pass from Onaga as Kaimuki pulled within 41-38 as the third quarter closed.

A follow shot by Dela Cazada brought the Bulldogs within one point, but they got no closer. David hit two mid-range jump shots to give Kalaheo breathing room.

Kaimuki pulled within 46-44 on a steal and layup by Onaga, but Judd answered with a trey and Moore hit an 18-foot jumper from the corner for a 7-point lead.

Kalani Ahmad swished a 3-pointer from the right wing to bring Kaimuki within 51-47 with 2:50 left. The Bulldogs went scoreless for the next 2 minutes and 21 seconds. Tate Brown sank two of his four free-throw tries, and Moore sank a foul shot after a technical was assessed against Ano.

Ano complained inappropriately to an official after getting hit in the mouth by Brown on the ensuing play. Kalaheo led 54-47 with 53 seconds left, but it wasn't a safe lead. After a Kaimuki miss, David was open downcourt, but lost the ball and threw it against the wall, drawing a technical foul.

Onaga made a free-throw to pull the Bulldogs within 54-48 with 29 seconds to go. They spent 16 seconds, however, getting their next shot off. Dela Cazada hit a bank shot to make it 54-50 with 13 seconds left, but Kaimuki didn't score again.

Ano, Kaimuki's best man defender, shook off the loss. "It's gonna make us work harder. The loss humbled us," the 6-1 senior said.
