Vulcans take down SilverswordsAlex Cabagnot and West Hawthorne each scored 17 points to help Hawaii-Hilo beat Chaminade 81-79 last night at Afook-Chinen Auditorium. The Vulcans (18-2, 6-2 PacWest) host the Silverswords (11-7, 5-3) again tomorrow.Brigham Young-Hawaii 74, Western New Mexico 70: At Silver City, N.M., C.J. Fellars' bank shot with under a minute to play gave the Seasiders their first lead last night, and Thomas Watkins iced the victory over the Mustangs (6-11, 1-5) with two free throws in the final seconds. Brigham Young-Hawaii (10-4, 5-0) remained undefeated in the PacWest, despite losing All-American Jake Chrisman, who fouled out with over seven minutes left and the Seasiders trailing by three. Chrisman still managed to lead Brigham Young-Hawaii with 17 points to overcome a game-high 26 points by Western New Mexico's Mike Sells. Montana State-Billings 113, Hawaii Pacific 108: At Billings, Mont., Alex Swerzbin led six Sea Warriors in double figures with 23 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome 32 points from Lucas Walker of the Yellow Jackets (10-6, 2-4). The Sea Warriors (7-10, 1-6) trailed 58-38 at halftime, but caught fire in the second half, shooting 60 percent from the field. Audrius Peciukas recorded a double-double for Hawaii Pacific with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
16 UH athletes earn academic honorsThe Western Athletic Conference announced All-Academic honors for the 2004 fall sports season, with 16 Hawaii athletes being honored.The honorees are Dana Buchanan, Sharlene Carillo, Chantelle Laan (women's cross country); Karl Noa, Kenny Patton, Dane Uperesa (football); Krystalynn Ontai, Joelle Sugai, Koren Takeyama, Jessica Uecker, Seline Williams, Wendi Young (women's soccer); Susanne Boogaard, Teisa Fotu, Kanoe Kamana'o and Cayley Thurlby (women's volleyball).
