Star-Bulletin staff
Volunteers are needed to help clean up the Waikalua Loko Fishpond in Kaneohe on Jan. 29.
The event from 8 a.m. to noon is sponsored by the Waikalua Loko Fishpond Preservation Society and Windward Ahupuaa Alliance.
Activities will include clearing out overgrown areas, removing invasive vegetation and mangrove shoots, picking up trash and debris, and minor repairs.
The fishpond is visited by thousands of schoolchildren each year who learn about the area's cultural, environmental and historical importance.
People of all physical abilities are needed, and the group is also seeking several volunteers with pickup trucks.
All volunteers must wear boots or close-toed shoes and bring long-sleeved shirts, insect repellent, sunscreen and a hat.
Gloves, trash bags, snacks, breakfast and lunch will be provided. Please inform organizers you will be coming by Wednesday by calling 247-6366 or 223-5535 or e-mailing info@waa-hawaii.org.
