Intro to oils

Learn more about use of essential oils for mind, body and spirit during a free workshop at Moiliili Community Center, 2535 S. King St. (near University Avenue).

Eileen Cain will offer an introductory class on oils and supplements meant to help reduce premature aging.

The class runs from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Jan. 29 in Room 102, and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 2 in Room 209.

Medical open house

The Plaza at Punchbowl, an assisted-living rental community, will host an open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The event offers an introduction to assisted living, as well as a tour of the premises at 918 Lunalilo St.

A free seminar and demonstration on adaptable medical equipment will also be held at 1:30 p.m. next Wednesday in the Activities Room.

Alicia DuPree from Hawaiian Islands Medical will demonstrate equipment and discuss proper use and insurance coverage guidelines.

V-Day coming fast

Valentine's Day is coming up fast, and to help you declare your love, Kahuku Public and School Library will host a free Origamic Architecture Workshop at 11 a.m. Jan. 28 in the library's conference room.

"Origamic Architecture" is a big name for making pop-up cards, the magical art of folding paper into a 3-D creation. Yuko Miyashiro will offer instructions for students ages 12 through adult, and each participant will receive a free kit.

Spaces are limited. Sign up at the library's reference desk, 293-8935. The library is at 56-490 Kamehameha Highway.

Write for kids

The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators-Hawaii will host its annual conference from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Richards Street YWCA, 1040 Richards St., Room 307.

The event, "Bucking the Odds: The Secrets to Getting Your Children's Book Published (Even if You're Not a Celebrity)," invites participants to polish skills and find out what's hot in the world of children's publishing.

Featured guests are Atheneum editor Caitlyn Dloughy and agent Scott Treimel, who will react to first pages provided by attendees. Local presenters will be author/illustrator Tammy Yee, author/reading specialist Marion Coste and children's librarian Maile Davis.

Cost is $75 for society members; $90 non-members. Register by Feb. 22. For more information or to register, call 373-9522.
