State awards contract to renovate airport

The state has picked Miller/Watts Constructors Inc. for a $12.5 million project to renovate Kahului Airport on Maui, including new ticket counters, replacement of baggage claim carousels and installation of a new emergency power system.

Construction is set to start in March, though airport operations will continue as normal, the company said. The project should last roughly a year and a half.

Advanced Technology opens office

McClean, Va.-based information technology provider Advanced Technology Systems Inc. has opened a Honolulu office to serve the Hawaii and Asia-Pacific region, the company said yesterday.

The Koapaka Street office will seek to serve the markets of homeland security, military support and telecommunications. The company plans to have an invitation-only reception at its offices tomorrow for government officials and industry representatives.

Kapolei to get self-storage facility

Pacific Land and Investment LLC, a developer, said yesterday it is planning a 100,000-square-foot self-storage facility in Kapolei.

The two-story Stor Secure Self-Storage of Kapolei will be built on 2.5 acres of Campbell Estate land across the street from the Kapolei Shopping Center and the Marketplace at Kapolei.

Construction is scheduled to begin at the end of the year, with the facility to open in mid-2006. The building will be designed with flexible interior space, allowing storage spaces to be re-sized as needed.

Software firm raises some money

Pipelinefx LLC, an animation software firm that rose from the failed Square USA studio in Honolulu, said it has closed an investment round led by Hawaii venture capital firm PacifiCap Group LLC.

An amount was not disclosed. Several members of the University of Hawaii angel investment network took part in the deal. Pipelinefx was founded in 2002 by former employees of Square USA and Honcad.

End confusion over insurance

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners and the state Division of Insurance are asking consumers to get smart about insurance policies by taking advantage of available information.

The offering is part of the fourth annual Get Smart About Insurance Week, which runs Jan. 24-28. During the week, consumers can call the Get Smart Hotline toll-free at 866-SMARTWEEK (866-762-7893) or visit www.naic.org/gsw to get a free brochure and information on what to expect from insurance coverage.

Yahoo profit explodes on ad sales

Yahoo Inc., owner of the second-most-used U.S. Internet search engine, said fourth-quarter profit jumped almost fivefold as it sold more advertising and recorded a gain from the sale of Google Inc. shares.

Net income rose to $372.5 million, or 25 cents a share, from $75 million, or a split-adjusted 5 cents, a year earlier, the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company said in a statement.
