Fun with drawing

Are you envious of the freedom and lack of inhibition that your young son or daughter enjoys while drawing? Then join your child for "Family Fun Drawing," a confidence-building workshop being offered this weekend by the University of Hawaii Outreach College.

Robert Regis Dvor‡k leads the sessions, including one involving drawing animals at the zoo.

Check the online listing, www.outreach.hawaii.edu, or call 956-8244 for details, or call 956-8400 to register.

The schedule:

Friday: Bring a small package of food coloring for a class recommended for children 6 to 15, 6 to 9 p.m. Cost is $44, plus $26 materials fee per family of two ($3 additional per child).

Saturday: "Drawing Animals at the Zoo," 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cost is $85, plus $12 materials fee and discounted Honolulu Zoo admission of $1. Meet inside the zoo entrance. Wear comfortable work clothes and bring a cotton rag and favorite drawing materials.

Sunday: "Plein Air Watercolor Workshop: Painting in the Open Air," 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Magic Island, Ala Moana Beach Park (meet on Ala Wai side). Cost is $85, with $15 materials fee. Brown-bag lunch suggested.

Honoring educators

The Moanalua High School PTSA, school administration and alumni will present the school's first Menehune Kina'ole Awards at a banquet, "A Moonlit Night in Moanalua," Feb. 24 at the Honolulu Country Club in Salt Lake.

This year's honorees are educator Calvin Shimomura, class of '75; and professional golfer and golf instructor Casey Nakama, class of '76.

A special award of thanks will also be given to Samuel T. Fujikawa, executive vice president of Continental Mechanical, for his support of the school.

"This award honors those who have done the right thing, in the right way, at the right time, in the right place, to the right person, for the right reason, with the right feeling, the first time," principal Darrel Galera said.

The event will feature entertainment and a fund-raising silent auction. Tickets are $100, available by calling Jeff or Tami Brock at 837-0159.
