Borrowing on
VA insurance is allowed
Question: Can I borrow on my Veterans Affairs insurance policy?
Answer: Policyholders may borrow up to 94 percent of the cash surrender value of their insurance and continue the insurance in force by payment of premiums. Interest on policy loans is compounded annually. The current interest rate may be obtained by calling toll-free 800-669-8477.
Since Sept, 11, 2000, policyholders of National Service Life Insurance and Veterans Special Life Insurance whose term policies are capped at renewal age 70 have cash values associated with their policies. Policyholders who voluntarily cancel their policies may either take the cash value or use it to purchase insurance.
For additional information about government life insurance, call the VA Insurance Center in Philadelphia toll-free, 800-669-8477, between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Eastern time, to discuss premium payments, insurance dividends, address changes, policy loans, naming beneficiaries and reporting the death of the insured.
Q: Does the VA offer a work therapy program for veterans who need help and employment?
A: VA's mental health psychosocial rehabilitation programs provide therapeutic work opportunities through the compensated work therapy program for veterans with physical disabilities and/or who are recovering from chronic mental illness, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance use disorders or homelessness. The program offers rehabilitative treatment to help veterans work and live in their community. Veterans referred by their primary care physician are provided an individualized vocational assessment, rehabilitation planning and transitional work experiences through partnerships with VA, other federal agencies and the business community. For more information call the VA at 433-0600.
