Rams rally, topple
No. 3 Campbell

Radford overcomes a 14-point second-half
deficit to beat the Sabers in an OIA West game

Trailing by 14 points in the second half, the Radford Rams basketball team had plenty of reason to surrender.

Instead, the Rams fought back with a remarkable run in the final 12 minutes to pull out a 63-55 upset win at Campbell last night.

Radford improved to 3-0 in Oahu Interscholastic Association West Division play behind a balanced attack.

William Kerins led the Rams with 16 points, while Juan Lewis had 11 points and nine rebounds. Point guard Mike Davis tallied 12 points for Radford, which got a big boost off the bench from sophomore Mike Sooto.

"It's hard to come from behind with high school kids -- so easy to give up -- but our bench kept us in the game in terms of spirit," Radford coach Kai Enos said.

Campbell, ranked No. 3 in the Star-Bulletin Top 10, dropped to 2-1 (11-3 overall). Tristan Bailey led the Sabers with 16 points, five boards and three steals. Ikaika Shelton tallied 13 points and six boards, but no other Saber scored in double figures.

"We lost to a good team that made its shots at the end," Campbell coach Sol Batoon said. "We played well until the end."

Kerins came through in a big way against Campbell's 1-3-1 zone. The senior forward hit the first of his two treys down the stretch to give Radford a 49-48 lead. It was the first of seven lead changes in the final 4 minutes. Kerins' second trey from the left corner put Radford up for good, 56-54, with 1:31 to play.

"No matter what happens, I know I can count on my team to come through," Kerins said.

Both 3-pointers were sprung by screens from Gary Satterwhite, who pinned Bailey on the low post. "We should've came out of the zone, but they said they couldn't hear me," Batoon said, acknowledging Radford's raucous group of about 200 fans. "We stayed in the zone too long, and we missed too many shots at the end. When you play a well-coached team of good players, you can't make mistakes."

The Rams sank their next six free-throw attempts to open a 62-55 lead with 21 seconds left. Davis hit four foul shots and Sooto swished two.

In all, Radford closed out the game with a 19-8 run.

The stretch run was a far cry from the beginning, when Radford stumbled.

Using a full-court press, the Sabers took a quick 7-0 lead less than a minute into the contest thanks to a steal and layup by Bailey, and a 3-pointer by Shelton.

Campbell called off the full-court press, relying on half-court pressure. Radford pulled within 14-11 with a layup by Tedy Tyler, but got no closer the rest of the first half. The Rams mixed man and 2-3 zone defenses, packing the paint with their zone.

Bailey drained a trey from the right corner and hit James Bannister for a 15-foot jumper as Campbell took a 21-12 lead shortly before the end of the first quarter.

Radford went back to its man defense to trigger an 8-2 run. Lewis scored off a steal, and again off an offensive board as the Rams pulled within 23-18 with 6:09 left in the second quarter.

Bailey sank another trey as Campbell extended the lead. The Sabers went to a 1-3-1 zone that stifled the Rams. Radford went scoreless in the final 5 minutes of the half, and trailed 30-20 at intermission. Radford committed four of its eight first-half turnovers during the drought.

Bailey had 10 points by halftime.

The Sabers, using an extended 2-3 zone, stretched the lead to 40-26 on a follow shot by Shelton. Radford kept its composure and went on a 13-6 run to get back in the game.

Tyler scored four points and Davis tallied seven, including a 3-pointer from the left corner. Davis' drive to the basket off an inbounds pass brought the Rams within 44-38 with 41 seconds to go in the third quarter.

A free throw by Lewis pulled Radford within 44-39 early in the fourth quarter. Campbell had the bonus in its favor, but made just three of six attempts midway through the second half.

Satterwhite hustled for a tip-in, and Sooto came up with two big plays. The sophomore swished a 3-pointer from the left wing and then drove the baseline for a reverse layup as the Rams tied the game at 46 with 5:31 left.
