Investigation continues
into death of bicyclist

Question: What ever happened to the driver of the truck that struck and killed bicyclist Ernest Sakai on Kalanianaole Highway?

Answer: Police opened a negligent-homicide case after the 22-year-old East Honolulu woman, who was driving a black 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck, struck the 68-year-old Hawaii Kai man.

Police said they are continuing to investigate the Oct. 9 case.

The driver has not been charged. Police say that these types of cases typically take up to a year before charges are filed.

The driver was heading eastbound when she apparently attempted to change lanes and may have lost control of the vehicle near Waialae Iki Park, police said.

The truck hit Sakai, who had been traveling east in the bicycle lane of Kalanianaole Highway near Kaimoku Place. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 8 a.m.

The woman driving the truck and her only passenger, a 2-year-old boy in a car seat, were not injured.

Police said speed was a possible factor in the accident but alcohol was not. Sakai was wearing a helmet.

Friends and relatives said Sakai was an avid cyclist who loved to ride.

Members of the cycling community said Sakai appeared to be doing everything right when the accident occurred and that motorists need to be mindful that a moment of inattention can cost someone their life.
