4 recruits visiting
UH campus today

The recruiting pace is picking up for the Hawaii football team.

The Warriors have secured nearly 10 oral commitments, and UH hosts a handful of potential future players this weekend, with more to come through the end of the month.

Three California high school players and a linebacker from Aiea are among the group that arrives today.

Antwan Mahaley (6-foot-4, 195 pounds) could be the big receiver Hawaii fans covet. Mahaley doesn't have blazing speed, but the Carson High (Los Angeles) product does have experience in a pass-first attack.

"I was going to play tight end this year, but we don't have one in our offense," Mahaley said. "Our offense is just like it (UH's run-and-shoot)."

Nevada and Southern Texas are also recruiting Mahaley.

Offensive lineman Tevita Stevens (6-3, 290) also appears to be a good fit for Hawaii's offense.

"Passing's all we do," said Stevens, who is from Hemet, Calif. "We run a lot of ghost formations, just the quarterback in the backfield."

Many of the top Pac-10 teams were recruiting Stevens, but among them, only Cal is still after him.

"They came and sized me up and said I'm too short," Stevens said.

He's long on academics. Stevens is a 4.0 student and his classes include advanced placement U.S. history.

Nick Battle, a 6-3, 215-pound defensive end from Mission Bay High in San Diego, also easily qualifies for college admission, and isn't afraid to travel. He also plans visits to New Hampshire, Idaho State, Richmond and San Diego State.

This is his second trip to Hawaii. He came for a track meet last year.

"I thought it was really nice, but the weather was strange," he said. "Sunny and rainy at the same time."

Aiea linebacker RJ Kiesel-Kauhane has drawn interest from Idaho and Tulane. He's 6-1 and 200 pounds and has a penchant for making big plays.

Next week's group includes quarterback Nick Lomax (son of former NFL star Neil Lomax) from Lake Oswego, Ore. Lomax has already visited Oregon, and takes a look at Boise State this week.
