Seasiders fend off Vulcans

Jake Chrisman scored 31 points in 38 minutes to help Brigham Young-Hawaii beat Hawaii-Hilo 90-87 last night.

Chrisman, the reigning PacWest Player of the Year, was 12-for-14 from the field and 5-for-6 from the line to keep the Seasiders (7-4, 2-0) unbeaten in conference play. The Seasiders hit 64 percent of their shots from the field.

Austin Smylie scored 18 points in support of Chrisman. Skip Esene led the Vulcans (15-2, 3-2) with 24 points.

Chaminade 81, Hawaii Pacific 63: Chris Reaves scored 21 points and pulled down seven rebounds in McCabe Gym to help Chaminade avenge Tuesday's triple-overtime road loss to the Sea Warriors.

Zach Whiting scored 19 points for the Silverswords (11-5, 5-1). Aleksander Bojic led the way for the Sea Warriors with 20 points.

Miyashiro named Gatorade volleyball winner

Tamari Miyashiro, a senior setter/outside hitter for Kalani High, has been named the Gatorade State Volleyball Player of the Year for Hawaii.

The 5-foot-7 Miyashiro, an All-State selection the past three seasons, is one of 51 players eligible for the national honor. She has been the Oahu Interscholastic Association East Division Player of the Year in both volleyball and basketball, and she maintains a 3.55 grade-point average.

"Tamari's athletic ability, knowledge of the game and emotional maturity separate her from her competitors," said Kalani coach Aven Lee.

Miyashiro joins recent Hawaii selections Aneli Cubi-Otineru (Punahou, 2003), Tuli Peters (Kahuku, 2002) and Kanoe Kamana'o (Iolani, 2001) among others in the Gatorade Circle of Champions.

Hawaii's Duplanty named to USOC post

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. >> Punahou School graduate Chris Duplanty, a three-time water polo Olympian, was given a new position as part of the U.S. Olympic Committee's sweeping reorganization yesterday.

Duplanty, a 1988 silver medalist, is vice chairman of the Athletes' Advisory Council. He was given a two-year term as liaison between the new ethics board and the new Olympic Assembly.
