HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL
No. 1 Iolani needs
buzzer-beater to
top Kamehameha
Star-Bulletin staff
With the game tied at 41, Iolani's Kawika Shoji nailed a jumper as time expired to give the No. 1-ranked Iolani Raiders a thrilling 43-41 victory over Kamehameha last night at Iolani.
Kyle Pape led the Raiders with a game-high 16 points, but a tough Warriors defense allowed only five Raiders to score, and held Iolani to their lowest point total in ILH play this year.
"They were very quick on defense and challenged our shots, causing us to struggle shooting the ball," Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said.
Jacob Ho led the Warriors with 12 points. After being outscored 15-8 to open the game, the Warriors countered with a 15-11 run of their own to keep the score close throughout.
"We have finals coming up, so I think that might have contributed to our deep freeze," Mugiishi said.
