Dying to act?
Troupe looks for new
murder-mystery actors

the New Year brings many resolutions, and if your resolution is to try something different in 2005, why not try acting? The Murder Mystery Players are looking for people to perform in their audience-member productions being held at Dave & Buster's. If you want to check out the program first, "Diamond Bessie's Revenge" is being performed at 7 p.m. every Friday in January and Feb. 5. The show includes a three-course dinner. Tickets are $34.95 per person plus tax and gratuity. Reserve at 589-2215. ... For youngsters, the Army Community Theatre is holding an audition for the role of Tam in "Miss Saigon," 5 p.m. tomorrow. Keiki ages 2 to 3 are needed for Act 1 of the play; for Act 2 the show needs a 6-year-old. Rehearsals begin Feb. 15, and the musical will run from Feb. 24 to March 12. For information, call 438-1980. ... If acting isn't your thing, what about singing? Don Ho's Island Grill is continuing the Al Waterson & You singing and karaoke contests, but they have broken the weekly contests into age groups. This year, keiki are welcome to compete on the first Sunday each month, teens on the second Sunday, adults on the third Sunday and senior citizens on the fourth Sunday. Competitions run from 6 to 9 p.m., and there is no participation fee. For information, call 947-5736. ...

Kudos to Julia Hamilton Ogilvie. The young artist is a musical theater finalist in the national Arts Recognition and Talent Search Program. Ogilvie, a senior at Punahou School, was among the top three national finalists at last year's National Shakespeare Festival and took first place in 2002 for her storytelling in the Hawaii State Forensic League. ... Kirk Kaleo Shinmoto of Moanalua High School is also an ARTS winner. He received a merit award in visual arts. ... The Iolani High School Orchestra has returned from a London trip, during which they were invited to perform in a New Year's Day parade. ... St. Patrick School is honoring five of its alumni at its April 22 banquet. Honorees are Brother Patrick Hughes, the Rev. Thomas Choo, Russell Valente, Michael Chu and Lebert O'Sullivan. Congratulations! ...

Former isle sportscaster Rob Fukuzaki continues to bring his reporting expertise to the big screen. You can catch a glimpse of him, as a reporter (of course), in the new movie "Coach Carter," which opens Friday. ...
