McLachlin sparks
Punahou in return

The Warriors of Kamehameha returned from Disney World with a renewed sense of unity.

Spencer McLachlin returned to the Punahou Buffanblu with a renewed sense of urgency.

Urgency won, just barely.

McLachlin scored 22 points, knocking down three key 3-point shots, and Jeremiah Ostrowski hit a 13-foot baseline jumper with 6 seconds left to break a tie as Punahou rallied for a 46-43 win at Kamehameha last night.

Ostrowski finished with just six points, but his game-winning shot, plus the ensuing free throw, were enough to defuse a Kamehameha team that was on a roll. The Warriors won two of their three games at a tournament in Florida last week.

Punahou, which opened Interscholastic League of Honolulu play with a win over Maryknoll on Friday, improved to 2-0 (12-6 overall).

"We knew where the open spots were, but we kept turning the ball over," Punahou coach Greg Tacon said of his team's traveling calls.

Sophomore guard Rykin Enos led Kamehameha (7-5 overall, 1-1 ILH) with 14 points.

"We have to have more discipline as a team," coach Jesse Nakanishi said. "We have more game experience. We played up today, from behind today, and with one shot to go today. We just didn't come through. We learned how to come out firing today. Some guys hit some big shots."

With scoring leader Ostrowski struggling to find open shots, the Buffanblu fell behind 18-7 early. The Buffanblu tried a little of everything to break out of their funk, using a 2-3 zone and even a 1-3-1 trap, briefly.

"Coach said we had to stop playing catch on the wing," said McLachlin, a 6-foot-5 sophomore. He missed two games last week during the Punahou Holiday Classic to participate in his older brother Parker's wedding festivities.

The Warriors' 2-3 zone kept the visitors in a lull until the second half. Danny Cho picked off a pass and scored on a breakaway layup to give the Buffanblu their first lead, 25-24, with 5:09 left in the third quarter.

Kamehameha was forced to come out of its zone once Punahou gained the lead

The lead changed hands four more times before McLachlin swished a trey from the top of the key to give Punahou a 38-36 lead with 5:38 remaining. Ostrowski, who missed his first eight shots, scored on a breakaway layup with 5:15 left. Punahou led 43-38 with 2:48 remaining after Ostrowski hit a 15-foot baseline jumper.

The Warriors rallied on a layup by Jacob Ho off an inbounds pass and then a 3-pointer by Ikaika Hardie for a 43-all tie with 1:16 left. They got the ball back with 56 seconds remaining after Ostrowski missed a 3-point try.

However, Kaohu Berg-Hee stole a pass near the corner, setting up Ostrowski's go-ahead shot.

"I knew I had to do something or I'd be the goat," said Berg-Hee, a 6-2 senior. He had one of Punahou's two turnovers in the final 2 minutes.
