Hawaii in overtime

The Hawaii women's basketball team had two chances to win last night's Western Athletic Conference game at San Jose State in regulation, but missed two crucial shots in the final minute.

The Rainbow Wahine tied the score at 43-43 on the first of two free throws by Jade Abele with 55 seconds left, but settled for overtime.

But, San Jose State outscored UH 11-6 in the extra period for a 54-49 victory, the fourth consecutive win by the Spartans (9-4, 2-1 WAC) over the Wahine (5-5, 1-2).

The Wahine closed the second half by outscoring the Spartans 10-2. Jade Abele made one of two free throws, then hit a 3-pointer. Janevia Taylor canned a jumper, followed by a short hook by Alofa Toiaivao and two free throws by Taylor.

However, Abele, fouled with 55.8 ticks on the clock, only made the first free throw to tie the score.

What was more frustrating for the Wahine was that they stole the ball at the other end and had possession with 25 seconds left. But Taylor's 19-foot jumper missed with 1.7 seconds remaining.

UH led 49-48 on Toiaivao's layup with 2:33 to go in overtime, but misfired on its last four shots and turned the ball over with 8 seconds to play, still trailing by only three points.

"We had a chance to win in regulation and overtime, but missed too many layups, didn't execute, didn't make good decisions and turned the ball over too many times," said UH coach Jim Bolla.

"In overtime, we got some early scores, but we didn't finish it. It was an ugly game. And, the thing was that we weren't getting bumped on our layups. We just seemed to be off balance. I don't know what it was. We shot well in practice."

Neither team shot better than 29 percent in the first half. This was a period in which the Wahine held an eight-point lead (16-8) with 6:34 left in the half, but managed only a jumper by Amy Sanders in the remaining minutes.

The Spartans finished the half with a 12-2 run to take a 20-18 lead at the break.

"We shot 50 percent from the free-throw line. That's bad. We have good shooters, so we have to work on that," said Bolla.

"Now we have to go play the two teams, Southern Methodist (Thursday) and Louisiana Tech (Saturday), with the best records in the conference."

Taylor finished with 11 points and 15 rebounds, her second double-double of the season. Abele and Toiaivao tied for team-high scoring honors with 12 points.
