50 Hawaii frosh
played collegiately

Fifty freshmen from the 50th State combined soccer with academics and campus life last fall with their first step toward obtaining a college degree.

The 32 women and 18 men started some matches, came off the bench in others, but found ways to contribute to the success of their teams.

Allison Tsuchida started five of the 18 matches for Boise State (9-8-2). The midfielder from Punahou tallied one goal on 10 shots. The goal was a game-winner vs. Eastern Washington in her third college match. She also had an assist.

Iolani graduates Katie Sakai and Emily Moore contributed significantly to Menlo (Calif.) College's successful season.

Sakai, a striker, started all but one of 20 matches. She scored nine goals on 23 shots and had one assist.

Moore, a midfielder, played in 14 matches and scored two goals on her six shots.

The Oaks (13-6-1) made their first appearance in the California-Pacific Conference championship match, but lost to Notre Dame de Namur 2-0.

Marissa Faye, a defender from Hawaii Prep, played in 14 matches and had one assist for the Regis (Denver) Rangers. Regis (19-5-0) lost the NCAA Division II, Region II championship match to Mesa State.

Madeline Lish-King, a freshman defender from King Kekaulike who is a sophomore academically, made the varsity at Lewis & Clark College in the Pioneers' first season of varsity women's soccer.

Mihana Diaz, an academic junior but a freshman eligibility-wise, was one of the NCAA Division III Pioneers' captains. She is a Hawaii Prep graduate.

"Mihana was the anchor of our defense this year. She has battled what was finally diagnosed as a stress fracture in her leg that kept her out of 12 matches," said coach Todd Anchkaitis.

Madison Perry, a midfielder from Kauai High, started all 15 matches she played for the Vanguard women's team. Her 20 shots resulted in three goals for the 7-9-2 Lions, an NAIA team in the Golden State Athletic Conference.

Kalaheo graduates Rachel Cordey and Jen Junk saw considerable action for the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers (6-11-0).

Cordey, a midfielder, started all 17 matches. She put five of 11 shots on goal and scored once. She had two assists.

Junk, a defender, played in 12 matches and started two for the NAIA school, and she assisted on one goal.

Kellie Sakanoi scored two goals on 10 shots for the NCAA Division II Grand Canyon U. Antelopes. The midfielder from Pearl City played in 10 matches, starting four.

Trel Mangarin played in all but one match, starting 14, for the 8-10-0 Humboldt State Lumberjacks. The former Hawaii Prep striker scored three goals and assisted on another. He was the NCAA Division II Lumberjacks' third-leading scorer, putting 11 of his 17 shots on goal.

Erin Nakasone got a taste of the collegiate game with nine appearances for the NCAA Division III Whitworth College (Spokane, Wash.) Pirates. The freshman midfielder from Mililani played 109 minutes and did not score on her one shot.
