Kalaheo holds off strong
charge from Roosevelt

Two teams served notice to the rest of the OIA Eastern Division last night that they are for real, as perennial power Kalaheo held off a very athletic Roosevelt squad 52-46 despite an outstanding 18-point performance by Rough Rider junior Kerstan Ho.

With the loss of All-Staters Sam Wilhoite and Theo Fujita, the Mustangs had a lot of rebuilding to do if they hoped to repeat last year's performance, which saw them capture their 12th OIA title in 14 years and finish as state runners-up.

A rough preseason saw Kalaheo go 4-6 while playing in a number of the state's top winter tournaments, as 2004 State Coach of the Year Chico Furtado looked to figure out his almost-brand-new lineup.

As they did in their season-opening win over Castle, Kalaheo found a way to hang tough after building a commanding lead as the talented Rough Riders made a huge late charge at the Mustangs to pull within striking distance.

"It was a very good game," Furtado said. "Roosevelt played some tough defense, and made some big 3-pointers at the end to make a run. We remained calm and came through and I'm real proud of the boys"

After entering the final quarter with a 34-22 lead, Furtado and company watched as Saint Louis School transfer Ho went-off, scoring 11 of Roosevelt's 13 points in the span of a minute and a half to help the Riders cozy up at 43-35.

But the Mustangs had an answer each time the Rough Riders put a few baskets together, as they took advantage of a double-bonus situation late in the game to ice the win.

"Kalaheo played really well," said Roosevelt coach John Chung. "Everytime we made a charge and got a few points they made a big shot and held-up."

Mustang junior point guard Chris Tumaneng helped Kalaheo's young lineup stay poised as they struggled to find an offensive rhythm early and again as they weathered Roosevelt's second-half run.

Tumaneng, who led Kalaheo with 10 points and five assists, found ways to help his squad remain in system in a game marred by turnovers and hit three big free throws in the last 41 seconds.

"Chris is a very calm kid," Furtado said. "Sometimes he even keeps me calm. He hit those big free throws for us down the stretch and they were all huge. Anytime you have a double-bonus situation, you gotta make free throws, and he did."

Playing short-handed with a couple of starters held out for the game, Roosevelt adjusted its rotation and rode Ho's outburst -- and 14 more points from Keo Keola -- to give the host Mustangs a strong challenge.

"We started off going well, and then came out flat for the third quarter," Tumaneng said. "Roosevelt's a good team and they weren't even at full strength tonight without a couple of their guys.

"The preseason was really interesting for us this year, but it seems like every one of our guys has come out strong for the regular season. We played pretty well tonight, but there's still a lot of work to do and we'll begin tomorrow."
