HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

No. 1 Raiders wake up,
beat Crusaders

Iolani starts slow before running
out to a 12-point win over Saint Louis
on the league’s opening night

They may be too young to know better, but the Saint Louis Crusaders completely controlled Iolani last night.

However, after 3 minutes without a point, the Raiders woke up, and the rest was history. Kyle Pape and Vinny Nip finished with 17 points apiece as Iolani stormed to a 58-46 win in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu opener for both schools.

Iolani, ranked No. 1 in the Star-Bulletin Top 10 since the start of preseason, is 15-2 overall.

Pape was consistent, though he didn't get a lot of open looks from long range. His scoring and defense were key for the Raiders. Pape and junior Kawika Shoji cornered Saint Louis sharpshooter Jack Miller most of the night, limiting the 6-foot-3 senior to 16 points.

"We came out a little slow," Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said. "Jack's a good player. We had to get up on him."

Despite the loss, it was a promising start for the tall Crusaders, who have just one senior on the roster. "We battled for four quarters, even when we were down 20," longtime coach Delbert Tengan said. "Early on, when Iolani wasn't hitting, we didn't cash in. You know sooner or later, they'll start hitting."

Saint Louis came out loose and accurate, blitzing Iolani in the first 3 minutes. After a 3-pointer by Cameron Bayne and a jumper by Conrad Shidaki, the visitors led 7-0.

Iolani's problems seemed to mount when Nip committed his second personal foul and went to the bench with 5:49 left in the first quarter.

"I told Vinny he can't foul," Mugiishi said. "Our offense grinds to a halt without him."

The Raiders got a quick spark when Ryan Dung scored five quick points off the bench, including a trey from the left wing.

That ignited the Raiders, who outscored the Crusaders 30-10 over the next 11 minutes. Pape had no room to get a lot of open looks, but he took the ball to the basket consistently and scored nine points as Iolani took a 32-21 lead at intermission.

"We fell in love with our outside shot a little too much," Tengan said.

Nip, who returned at the start of the second quarter, scored six points to help fuel Iolani's comeback.

Miller had eight points by the break. Saint Louis handled Iolani's defensive pressure with relative success until the second quarter. The Crusaders committed seven turnovers in the first half. Iolani had just three giveaways in the first half, including none in the second quarter.

Three quick turnovers by Saint Louis sparked an 8-0 blitz by Iolani to start the second half. Pape hit a jumper from the right wing in transition, and added a layup after a steal by Shoji. Iolani led 40-21 when Saint Louis called timeout with 6:35 to go in the third.

Nip caught fire and drained two 3-pointers as Iolani extended the lead to 47-23 with 4:49 left in the third. The lead was up to 26 before Saint Louis went on a 10-0 run to make the score more respectable.
