Phone books omit
some safety maps

WAILUKU » The new 2005 Verizon telephone directory has inadvertently omitted Tsunami Evacuation Maps 3, 4, 5 and 6, covering South and West Maui areas from Kealia to Napili, Maui County officials said.

"The omission appears to be in Maui County directories only, and our Maui County Civil Defense immediately notified state Civil Defense of the omission," said Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa.

Arakawa said he has ordered that the maps be placed on the Maui County Civil Defense Web site, where they can be downloaded.

"Maui hotels may also wish to download and print out the maps and place them in hotel rooms for our visitors' information," Arakawa said.

For people without Internet access, county officials recommend that the maps be taken from their old Verizon directories before recycling them.
