Man pleads guilty to fitness club thefts

An attorney who practiced law in California pleaded guilty yesterday to breaking into lockers at several 24 Hour Fitness Centers and possessing stolen credit cards.

Clifford Mau, 43, was indicted May 18 on charges stemming from a rash of break-ins between April 7 and 22.

He entered his plea to second-degree theft, two counts of fourth-degree theft, second-degree burglary, three counts of credit card theft and third-degree identity theft before Circuit Judge Steve Alm.

Mau, a member of 24 Hour Fitness, gained access to fitness centers on Oahu using stolen membership cards and broke into lockers to steal members' belongings, including credit cards, said deputy attorney general Lance Goto.

He was arrested April 23 in possession of a stolen credit card after he used another stolen credit card to purchase items exceeding $300 at Daiei.

Co-defendant Larry Mantanona, 31, also pleaded guilty to credit card theft and second-degree identity theft for being in possession of a stolen credit card and using it to purchase more than $300 in goods.

Both remain free on bail while awaiting sentencing on June 6. Mau faces a maximum five-year prison term; Mantanona, a one-year jail term.

He pointed a gun at the teller in two of the robberies and exposed a handgun tucked into his waistband in the third, according to police. He allegedly fled with a total of $5,905, including bait bills. He wished a City Bank teller "Merry Christmas" before fleeing with $375.

He was arrested Dec. 30 in Haleiwa after offering a man in Waialua $100 for a ride.
