BOYS BASKETBALL

’Canes play No. 3
Sabers tough

Tristan Bailey knew the Kapolei Hurricanes would bring their 'A' game to the season opener against his highly touted Campbell squad.

Bailey, a 6-foot-3 senior, was ready, putting out every fire to lead the Sabers to a 48-36 win at Kapolei last night. Bailey scored 23 points and hauled in 17 rebounds as Campbell (8-2 overall) opened its Oahu Interscholastic Association West slate with a win.

The Sabers, ranked No. 3 in the Star-Bulletin Top 10, got plenty of contributions. Ikaika Shelton added 10 points. Daniel Phillips, a 6-8 senior, grabbed 11 caroms, and James Bannister had nine. Mark Sealy came off the bench to dish out five assists.

Ryan Dela Cruz led Kapolei with 10 points, all in transition.

"They played hard 'D' on us," Bailey said. "Plus, we had that two-week break. It took us awhile to get back into rhythm."

Campbell coach Sol Batoon knew the lengthy time away from game action would be a double-edged sword. "We got to work on things, but we were two steps behind. By the time we got in rhythm, our guys were in foul trouble."

Kapolei simply turned cold from the perimeter at the worst time during the second half. "We got too complacent, settling for the outside shot," Kapolei coach Darren Camello said.

"We handled the ball well against their halfcourt pressure," Batoon said of his guards.

The host Hurricanes showed no fear of Campbell's bigger inside presence. Jefferson Gaygay's putback gave Kapolei its first lead, 15-14, with 10 seconds left in the first quarter.

Robert Morris' fast-break layup off a feed from Bailey gave the lead back to the Sabers. Bailey scored his team's next five points, and Campbell took a 22-15 lead into halftime. Campbell held Kapolei scoreless in the entire second quarter.

Kapolei seized momentum out of the break with an 8-2 run. Dela Cruz turned a steal into a layup, and came up with another fast-break layup as Kapolei cut the lead to 24-23 with 5:16 left in the third.

However, Bailey put out the fire with a follow shot and a drive through the middle for a left-handed layup. Moments later, Po'okela Ahmad's layup brought the Hurricanes within 28-27, but Campbell answered again. Ikaika Shelton swished two foul shots, and Ryan Hayes hit a reverse layup for a 5-point Sabers lead with 1 minute left in the third.

Kapolei struggled from the field, scoring just two points over a span of more than 6 minutes. Dela Cruz gave his team a spark with a breakaway layup, and Cameron Moody hustled for a putback layup as the Hurricanes cut the lead to 37-33 with 2:37 remaining in the game.

Bailey hit both ends of a 1-and-1, and Sealy blocked a layup attempt by Dela Cruz. The rebound went directly to Ahmad, who was out of bounds, giving the ball back to Campbell with 1:54 left.

Brad Padayao missed an open 3-point try from the left corner, and Bailey rebounded. He missed his first free-throw try, but no Hurricane blocked him out. Bailey missed a follow shot, but Phillips hit the putback for a 41-33 Sabers lead with 1:13 to play.

Bannister sank a foul shot with 1:04 left to give Campbell a 42-33 lead, but Padayao drained a trey from the left wing to cut the margin to six with 56 seconds left.

Phillips made two of his next four free-throw tries, and after Gaygay and Padayao missed long-distance shots, Bailey put the game away with a couple of foul shots. Campbell led 46-36 with 20 seconds to go.

The Campbell-Kapolei game is a neighborhood rivalry, but the ambiance the Hurricanes' gym was quite cordial.

"Kapolei has a good up-and-coming program, too. Their kids and our kids all know each other, and that makes it an interesting game," Batoon said. "But it's not a rivalry."
