Rainbows asking for donation for relief fund

Donations for the Red Cross Tsunami Relief Fund will be accepted at the University of Hawaii basketball team's game against San Jose State on Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Members of the UH cheerleading squad will be at Gate A to collect donations to assist the relief efforts in the tsunami-stricken areas of Southeast Asia.

The game has also been designated as "Military Night." Members of the armed services, retirees and Department of Defense personnel will receive two tickets for the price of one by presenting their military ID. Representatives from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard will be recognized at halftime.

Tip-off for the Western Athletic Conference game is set for 7:05 p.m.

Palmer, Player, Trevino to play in Kona

Golf greats Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Lee Trevino have accepted sponsor exemptions to play in Kona at the MasterCard Championship later this month, the PGA Tour announced yesterday.

The tournament is the opening event of the 25th anniversary season of the Champions Tour, which was formerly known as the Senior Tour. The Jan. 17-23 event will take place at the Hualalai Golf Club.

Palmer, Player and Trevino are members of the World Golf Hall of Fame, and have played the MasterCard Championship a combined 26 times. This will be the event's 22nd playing. Fuzzy Zoeller is its defending champion.

Hawaii cracks Baseball America Top 50

Hawaii is ranked No. 42 in the Baseball America Preseason Top 50 Poll, which was released yesterday.

The magazine also predicted that Hawaii will advance to NCAA Regional play for the first time in 11 years.

UH opens its season Feb. 10 at home against Alabama, which is ranked No. 43 on the poll.

Esene, Cabagnot lead No. 25 Vulcans

Career nights from Alex Cabagnot and Skip Esene helped Hawaii-Hilo to a 95-80 Pacific West Conference win over Western New Mexico Tuesday night at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. It was Hilo coach Jeff Law's 100th win.
