Festival rings in
the Rooster

The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii ushers in the Year of the Rooster with its biggest annual celebration, the New Year's Ohana Festival, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Admission is free.

The festival will be held at the center on South Beretania Street, and nearby Moiliili Field. It will be a showcase of multicultural cuisine and entertainment; cultural art displays and demonstrations; a craft fair, antiques and book sale; and keiki activities, games and rides.

The center's motto will be carried out in the festival's theme: "Honoring our heritage. Embracing our diversity. Sharing our future."

Parking is free at the University of Hawaii at Manoa parking structure. A complimentary trolley service will run between the parking structure and the Japanese center throughout the day.

Cultural displays and demonstrations include the following:

» The Classic Bonsai Club will display the miniature potted plants and offer advice to those who bring in their own bonsai plants.
» The Japanese Animation Society of Hawaii will show popular anime.
» "Ikebana" (flower arranging), origami (paper folding), "chigirie" (paper tearing art), "oshibana" (pressed flower art) and "soroban" (abacus) activities will be available.
» "Omamori," or good-luck talismans, can be purchased from Hawaii Kotohira Jinsha -- Hawaii Dazaifu Tenmagu.
» Chado Urasenke Tanko Kai Hawaii Association will demonstrate a traditional tea ceremony throughout the day in the center's Seikoan Tea House on the fifth floor.

Former first lady Jean Ariyoshi will be autographing her new book, "Washington Place: A First Lady's Story," from noon to 2 p.m. in front of the center's gallery. It sells for $36.46.

Other books and a "Things Japanese Sale," which includes an array of items ranging from elegant kimonos to antiques, will also be available.

Thirteen food booths featuring Japanese dishes and favorites from other ethnic groups, a diversity of entertainment and more than 30 craft booths are also scheduled for the festival.
