Man hurt in Waipahu drive-by shooting

A 50-year-old man was injured in an apparent drive-by shooting in front of a Waipahu home last night, police said.

A vehicle drove by as shots were fired at a group celebrating New Year's Eve at an Awalau Street house around 7:20 p.m., according to police.

The group heard popping sounds, but they thought it was firecrackers until the victim realized he had been shot, police said.

He was taken by ambulance to the Queen's Medical Center in serious but stable condition.

Emergency Medical Services District Chief Jason Kaneshiro said the victim was shot "in the extremity," but would not specify whether it was an arm or leg.

Knife-wielding man allegedly burns house

WAILUKU » Maui firefighters put out a blaze in a room of a two-story house in south Maui on Thursday, but not before police subdued a knife- wielding man.

Authorities said the man started the fire and would not let firefighters into the house, so police had to stun him with a Taser gun.

The room was destroyed and the rest of the house had smoke damage, Fire Battalion Chief Alan Cordeiro said.

Firefighters took 41 minutes to get the fire under control at 29 Hoonani St. in Kihei after the initial alarm at 1:43 p.m. yesterday.

Cordeiro said there were no injuries and no estimated damage.
