Doris Duke Theatre
features movies with
Islamic, Arabic and
Persian themes

Looking for something different to watch in 2005? Check out the Honolulu Academy of Arts' Doris Duke Theatre for an array of different films to view. The Islamic-Arabic-Persian film series is the focus of this month's films. The schedule follows.

» "Silent Waters" (2003, directed by Sabiha Sumar): It is 1971 in Pakistan, the year when Islamic nationalism is on the rise. A woman struggles to keep her son away from the fire of Islamic fundamentalism. Not rated. In Punjabi with English subtitles. At 4 p.m. tomorrow and 4 and 7:30 p.m. Monday.

» "Forget Baghdad: Jews and Arabs" (2002, directed by Samir): A documentary examining representations of Jews and Arabs in Middle Eastern popular culture and the experiences of those in-between peoples: Arabic Jews and Jewish Arabs. No rated. In English and in Arabic and Hebrew with English subtitles. At 1 and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.

» "Turtles Can Fly (Lakposhtha Ham Paravaz Mikonand)" (2004, directed by Bahman Ghobadi): Iran's official entry for the 2005 Oscars. The film covers refugee life along the Iraqi-Iranian border before the U.S. invasion of Iraq through the eyes of children. Not rated. In Kurdish with English subtitles. At 7:30 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Jan. 9.

» "Lightning in a Bottle" (2004, directed by Antoine Fuqua): An epic film that traces the history and politics of the blues featuring the legendary blues musicians. Rated R. At 7:30 p.m. Jan. 10-12 and 14, and 1 p.m. Jan. 12-13.

» "Nicotina" (2003, directed by Hugo Rodriguez): A Mexican crime caper done in the style of directors Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez and Guy Ritchie. Rated R. In Spanish with English subtitles. At 7:30 p.m. Jan. 15, 18 and 19; 4 p.m. Jan. 16; and 1 p.m. Jan. 19.

» "Silver City" (2004, directed by John Sayles): Scathing satire of American politics. Rated R. At 1 p.m. Jan. 20, 7:30 p.m. Jan. 20-21 and 24-25, and 4 p.m. Jan. 23.

» "P.S." (2004, directed by Dylan Kidd): Laura Linney and Topher Grace star in this film about relationships and discovery. Kidd also directed the film "Roger Dodger." Rated R. At 1 p.m. Jan. 26-27 and 7:30 p.m. Jan. 26, 28 and 31.

Next month's film series will focus on Black History Month and will feature films by Spike Lee, Mario Van Peebles, Andrew Lau and more.
