Hawaii Sports Car Club 2005 schedule set

The Hawaii Region of the Sports Car Club of America announced six major races on Oahu and Maui in 2005.

The first Solo II race will take place on Jan. 2 at Hawaii Raceway Park. About 70-90 cars will compete, from stock vehicles to race cars, in competition, which is an amateur event. Each driver is given four runs through the sports car course, and the driver with the single fastest time in the class wins the class.

Points are kept throughout the year and determine prizes and trophies presented at the end of the year. Drivers must participate in more than half of the year's races to be in the running for points and run-off championship. Cost is $25.

For more information, contact Curtis Lee at 262-5987.

Regional sports car races to be held: Six wheel-to-wheel, Solo I and track day racing events will also be held at Hawaii Raceway Park. The first competition will be held on Jan. 23, 2005.

In order to race in SCCA regional race and Solo I, all drivers must pass a drivers school to obtain a competition license since cars are raced at speeds up to 140 mph and passing is permitted.

In addition, all drivers and vehicles must have a number of safety features before they are allowed to race.
