Rice advanced to the championship game and will face Xaverian (N.Y.) today in an 8 p.m. battle. Fairfax and Montverde (Fla.) will play for third place at 6:30 p.m.
Fairfax, the two-time Iolani Classic defending champion, will play for third place at 6:30 p.m. It was a stunning ouster of the Lions, who won the Los Angeles city title and California state crown last year.
Rice, arguably the most athletic team in the tourney, rolled to a 43-28 lead in the third quarter, but Donovan White began to hit long-range bombs. White nailed two treys to bring Fairfax within 45-34 with 1:41 left in the third quarter.
The Lions trailed by 14 midway through the fourth before going on a 13-4 run. Rice began to falter against a frenetic Fairfax press, and 3-pointers by Chace Stanback and Jerren Shipp brought the Lions to within 59-54 with 2:46 left.
Rice made good on its next four free-throw attempts to extend the lead to eight, but Fairfax was unrelenting. Matt Shaw's turnaround jump hook off the glass brought the Lions within five. After another Rice turnover, Stanback sank two free throws to bring Fairfax to within 63-60 with 42 seconds left.
However, the Lions allowed Rice to run 28 seconds off the clock before Stanback intentionally fouled Taskico Brown. The point guard was injured on the play, but Rice burned a time out to get him back in the game. He made one of his two free throws for a 64-60 lead with 14 seconds left.
Vines then drained two foul shots to give Rice a six-point lead with 13 seconds to go. Jamal Boykin's inbound pass to White sailed out of bounds, and Curtis Kelly sealed the win by sinking two free throws with 10 seconds left.
White led Fairfax with 13 points. Boykin, a 6-8 senior who will play at Duke next season, finished with 12 points and six boards. Stanback, a 6-7 sophomore guard, tallied 12 points and six rebounds, and Shipp added 10 points and seven caroms.
Lavance Fields scored 16 points and Saiquon Stone added 13 to lead Xaverian, which will meet Rice in an all-New York final tonight.
Arminas Urbutis and Giedrius Kynsas led Montverde with 11 points each. Kynsas also pulled down 11 rebounds.
Montverde trailed 43-41 with 7 seconds remaining. The Eagles inbounded from under their basket, but Urbutis lost control of the ball as he was double-teamed in the low post. The ball spurted out of the key and slam-dunk champion Chris Lowery threw down a dunk with 1 second to play.
The win capped a big comeback by the Clippers, who trailed 26-22 at halftime. They switched to a 2-3 zone in the third quarter and sent the taller Eagles into a scoring drought that almost lasted into the fourth stanza. Xaverian went on a 7-0 run to take the lead for good.
Montverde, an international boarding school, pulled within 39-36 when Kynsas missed an open 3-point try with 2 minutes left. Terrence Mayrose drove for a basket and Jake Stevens hit a foul shot to stretch Xaverian's lead to six with 1:19 left.
Montverde pulled within 42-41 on Luc Mbah A Moute's three-point play with 30 seconds left. After Mayrose hit a free throw with 27 seconds left, the Clippers led by two.
