Campbell moves up
to No. 3

The first two weeks of the Star-Bulletin Boys Basketball Top 10 are turning out to be as cranky as a newborn babe.

Only three teams stayed put -- No. 1 Iolani, No. 2 Punahou and fifth-ranked Kamehameha -- while the other seven in last week's Top 10 shuffled.

Campbell rose a spot to No. 3, while Kahuku moved into the poll at No. 9. Both played in the Sabers Hoop Classic, but remained somewhat under the radar. Games at the tourney began as late as 9 p.m., thanks to a schedule that was partly determined by miserable traffic conditions in Ewa Beach.

The Sabers got two free throws by Ryan Hayes with 7 seconds left for a 53-52 win over Kahuku.

"I think they can take the (Oahu Interscholastic Association) East," Campbell coach Sol Batoon said. Daniel Phillips, a 6-foot-8 transfer, was named MVP of the tourney, while teammates Tristan Bailey, Robert Moore and James Bannister made the all-tourney team.

Kahuku got a good start, thanks in part to the football team's relatively early departure from the state tourney. Point guard Clinton Parks and forward Devin Unga of Kahuku also made the all-tourney squad.

Following Iolani, Punahou and Campbell is rapidly improving Baldwin. The Bears bounced back from a lopsided loss to Iolani with wins over Kailua, Kohala and Keaau to capture the Seabury Hall Invitational over the weekend.

Point guard Cody Tesoro stepped up with 25 points in the title-game win over Keaau.

Konawaena moved up two notches despite losing to Waiakea. The Wildcats posted wins over Pearl City and Hilo, but last week's first win over Hilo is finally registering in voters' minds. Last week, Hilo beat Campbell, just two nights before losing to Kona.

Roosevelt, Kahuku and University round out the Top 10. University slipped from No. 6 after losing two close games to mainland teams at the Maui High Classic.
